HOT PICK ==> One Week Girlfriend by Monica Murphy

SYNOPSIS:

Temporary. That’s the word I’d use to describe my life right now. I’m temporarily working double shifts—at least until I can break free. I’m temporarily raising my little brother—since apparently our actual mother doesn’t give a crap about either of us. And I always end up as nothing but the temporary girlfriend—the flavor of the week for every guy who’s heard the rumor that I give it up so easily.

At least Drew Callahan, college football legend and local golden boy, is upfront about it. He needs someone to play the part of his girlfriend for one week. In exchange for cash. As if that’s not weird enough, ever since he brought me into his world, nothing really makes sense. Everyone hates me. Everyone wants something from him. And yet the only thing Drew seems to want is . . . me.

I don’t know what to believe anymore. Drew is sweet, sexy, and hiding way more secrets than I am. All I know is, I want to be there for him—permanently.

REVIEW:

This story is told from alternating POV's and executed perfectly.

Drew is star football player, good looking, exceeds in school, and has a ton of friends.  From the outside Drew's life looks perfect.  However, his life is FAR from perfect.
"I shut myself off to make my life bearable.  I'm like a damn machine sometimes.  Unfeeling. Uncaring. Emotionless." ~ Drew
Two years have passed since Drew has stepped foot in his father's home. His father insisted that he come home for Thanksgiving.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.  Drew needs a distraction while he is home.   What could Drew possibly need to make this visit home bearable?  Well, Drew needs a girlfriend…  Drew needs a girlfriend for 1 week to face his father and step mother.

Drew approaches the one girl in town that he believes can keep just as much of an emotional distance as he can.  A girl that he has heard is an easy score.  A girl that won't expect anything from him.  A girl that he knows can not turn down his offer.…. That girl is FABLE…..

Fable was wise beyond her years.  She is more of a mother to her younger brother, Owen, than a sister because her mother is an alcoholic and is pretty much absent from their lives.  Fable is doing her best to make ends meet to support her family.  Her world revolves around her little brother.  Fable does her best to act like she is a "hard ass", but it doesn’t take long to see that she has a vulnerable side.  Fable has a very jaded perception of herself.
"There is no room for romance in my life.  It's so stupid, but I let guys use me because for that one feeling moment, when he's focusing all of his attention on me and no one else, it feels good.  It helps me forget that no one really cares" ~ Fable.

Drew has a proposition for Fable, one that she can not refuse.  All Fable cared about was the money.  Fable is determined to be the best "fake girlfriend" she can be.

As soon as they arrive at Drew's parents' home, you quickly sense the tension.  Things become increasingly uncomfortable for both Dew and Fable.  Fable comes up with a plan to save Drew if he should need to be rescued for any reason, a "safe word".  This "safe word" can be spoken or he can text her when he needs her to come to his rescue.

 ….MARSHMALLOW….

Drew is hiding something and Fable is determined to find out what it is.  She doesn't want to push him to tell her, so she is forced to figure it out on her own, or hope that Drew will trust her enough to tell her.  Drew has a lot of secrets and he comes with a ton a baggage.  Fable begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together.  What happened to Drew in his past has shaded his entire life…Ruined it.  Drew is tired of letting it rule him.

As they begin to know each other, their insecurities begin to show.  Can they help each other heal?  Can they help each other overcome their pasts?
"Like souls find each other, you know.  As corny as it sounds, I'm starting to believe we were brought together for a reason."  ~ Fable
Lines begin to blur while they both begin to develop feelings for each other.  Neither know if the other is just playing the role or if their feelings are real.
"Hell, I've craved this sort of connection with someone for years, always afraid to believe in it."
But I'm a believer now.  Thanks to my one week girlfriend." ~Drew

Once Fable discovers what Drew has been hiding, will she turn her back on him?
"This man came into my life for some reason.  Just as I cane into his.  Maybe we're supposed to help each other cope.
Or give each other hope." ~ Fable
I absolutely LOVED this book. You immediately feel the connection between the two characters.  I was emotionally vested in this book.  Reading Drew's heart ache unfold right in front of my eyes just about broke my heart.  I loved how Fable was there to help Drew cope with his demons of his past.  And at the same time, Fable was learning to trust Drew.  To see Fable open her heart to Drew was heartwarming…  I recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a great story addressing deep issues.  I am not going to tell you what the deep issues are, you are going to have to read the book.
