Wow! Vi Keeland has done it yet again. I know the year just started but I feel this will be my favorite book of 2021. I knew going into this, it was going to leave me with a hangover. I was so immersed in the story that I may have rushed through reading it and was a bit sad for it to end so quickly. I didn’t know what to do with myself, so I picked it right back up and started from the beginning. Let me just say that reading it the second time around did not disappoint. I fell in love with the characters a bit more the second go around. This is still leaving me a bit lost. One of the things I love about Vi’s writing is that she creates characters you can relate to in a way. She does a marvelous job placing you into the book right with the characters.
The meeting between Stella Bardot and Hudson Rothschild started with an invitation that wasn’t meant for Stella. She was supposed to attend such a lavish wedding, have some fun and return to life. Who knew, this one night of lies would turn both their lives around.
“You’re not a woman who needs a man. You’re a woman a man needs.”
Stella’s strength is something to be admired. Everyone around her can see it, but her own self. Stella is smart as heck, independent and strong and doesn’t need anyone to support her. She hasn’t had the easiest year, but that never once stopped her. Stella still tried to push through and pursue her dream of starting her own business. All her time has been devoted to her work and her success, her happiness has taken a back seat. I loved her relationship with Olivia. Who knew attending the wedding as someone else would bring along a friendship as well as a once in a lifetime opportunity. Olivia believed in her business and helped open up many doors for her. But that also meant working closely with Hudson. They didn’t start off on the right foot, but their differences would need to be put aside as they are spending a lot of their time together. Fisher, I absolutely loved Fisher. Everyone needs a person like Fisher on their side. He’s Stella’s soulmate who just gets her and is always there even before she even thinks she needs him.
Hudson…he makes me swoon. He’s a successful businessman and a big softie when it comes to the people who he cares about. Love the closeness that he has with Olivia. He will do anything and everything to make his sister happy. I also love the relationship he has with his daughter, Charlie. He is the devoted father who will do anything for her. He is never too busy for her, which I love. Without realizing it, Stella is slowly fitting in his inner circle.
“I’m just waiting for that little whisper in your head to get loud enough for you to listen.”
“I’d much rather show you than tell you. Take a chance, Stella.”
The chemistry between Hudson and a Stella is fire, I could feel the fierceness just from reading. Hudson is definitely attracted to her but Stella is fighting it. They both have been burned in the past. Stella isn’t quite positive mixing business with pleasure is a good idea considering it didn’t go so well for her before. He is giving it his all to help her become successful, while trying to win her over. Hudson has the patience of a saint. I loved that he doesn’t rush her and will wait her out. He knows there’s turmoil in her head and he’s okay with it. He jokingly pushes the idea on her but isn’t demanding about it. Hudson wants her head to be in it completely when she decides he’s worth the shot. Hudson is the type of person who will show you he truly cares, rather than just using his words. The little things he does for her and her business, is slowly wearing her down. It may seem like Hudson is helping Stella find her happiness after the bad year she’s had, but it really is Stella that is helping Hudson. She is making him realize that he can have happiness again. That having someone to come home too is possible with the right person.
“I don’t think any of the things that happened are coincidence. I think life is a series of stepping stones that branch out into all different directions. We have no idea what path we’re supposed to follow, so we tend to walk a straight line and follow the biggest stones, because that’s the easiest thing to do. Coincidences are the smaller stones that lead you on a path that veers off. If you’re brave enough, you follow those stones, and you wind up exactly where you’re supposed to be.”
Stella has a unique hobby, which I’m totally looking at getting into. She reads diaries written by other people from all over the world. The one diary she read is what got her to the wedding in the first place. I love how Hudson didn’t poke fun at her for reading them, but rather questioned her about the storyline. I think it somehow brought them a bit closer. But when the pieces are slowly put together Stella’s hobby could be the demise of their relationship. The truth will be revealed and the connection to them both will be questioned. Was it coincidence that brought them together or was it planned? Either way, that diary will bring them around full circle. Will their connection be strong enough to keep them together?
