SKIN IN THE GAME by JACKIE BARBOSA

Summary:

Angela Peterson was always the quiet, shy kid growing up in Harper Falls, crushing on the high school quarterback and honing her football strategy skills. Now grown up and coaching the high school team, she’s shocked when that same sexy quarterback returns to Harper Falls asks her back to his hotel room. And then tries to steal her job.
Injured NFL quarterback Cade Reynolds is in Harper Falls to take over as interim head coach, and he never thought the tall, blond bombshell he propositioned would offer up any resistance. Not to a repeat of the amazingly wild night they shared and certainly not to his coaching position.
But the Harper Falls High Eagles are Angie’s team, and even the hometown hero won’t take that away from her, no matter how hot he is. As the two engage in a battle of wits and wills, this is one game neither is prepared to lose.

Review:

This book is a book that football lovers will appreciate. However, if you’re not much of a football fan you and just looking for a really good romance book, this is it too. Jackie did a great of job captivating me throughout the entire book that I was not able to put it down and it became a very quick read for me. I had no clue as to which way she was going to go next with the book and kept everything as unpredictable as possible.

Angela (Angie) had a crush on Cade all through high school. I mean who wouldn’t, right? HOT guy, very popular, and quarterback of the high school football team. She was a freshman while he was a senior when she approached him and threw him for a loop when said that the team wouldn’t win a game if they only had twelve offensive plays. How would she know they only had twelve plays if she didn’t count every single one of them? He owed her though, because not only did the team win State Championships that year, he went on to play for the NFL.

Angie grew up with brothers, so it was obvious she grew up with football. She was very shy and kind of geeky in high school, but as an adult, she is the complete opposite. Yes, sometimes she is very shy and reserved, she likes her privacy (but who doesn’t), but she’s become beautiful and more outspoken. When her mother died, she was afraid she would lose her dad as well, so she gave up her life to move back in her hometown to take care of him and to avoid losing him too. One can see the love she has for teaching her students, and her love for coaching football.

Cade lived and loved football. He was the quarterback for his high school team, played in college and was drafted into the NFL. He was living his dream; he was doing what he loved, he was very popular, wealthy and could have any woman he wanted. But one play during a game put a halt to playing. He had injured his shoulder that required extensive surgery and rehab. He could throw a ball perfectly, but he couldn’t train like he used to. Until then, he couldn’t play, his team didn’t want him; he felt rejected. Even without playing he still made millions, but what is the money if you’re not doing what you love?

Cade is instantly attracted by Angie after seeing her for the first time. He gets more turned on by her drink order and better yet, by her picking up the sports section. He invites her to sit at the table with him. There’s something familiar about her, he knows her, but he can’t seem to pinpoint it and Angie doesn’t help him remember. He invites her to dinner and she accepts knowing Cade Reynolds is not interested in someone like her; has never been and never will be. She knows this will be a one night stand, something she never really does, but yet, being with Cade is always something she’s always thought of doing. One night is all she can give herself.

Angie almost cancels her date but meets Cade in his luxury suite. This is something she is not used to. They are from completely different worlds; he comes from a world full of money, she works for every single cent she has and spends it appropriately. As soon as she walks through those doors, you can feel the sexual tension floating in the room. While watching the sunset, plans for dinner disappear when one thing leads to another. You can feel the desire and the passion that Angie has been feeling for Cade all those years. HOT, fiery, passionate sex, it’s actually pretty intense. But there seems to be more than a sexual connection between the two, there’s something deeper. When Angie finally comes to, she realizes her mistake and leaves before he can crush her heart.

Angie is the type of person who likes to work to her way to the top and earn her way without or with very little help from anyone. She is the assistant coach of the football team, who dreams of becoming the head coach when the current head coach retires. So she is completely disappointed and frustrated when Cade is asked to fill in the Head Coach role, when he becomes ill. She thought she would never see him again, yet she can’t seem to escape him. The sexual tension builds more and more every day that they see each other. He makes it known he wants to be with her. Not only does she need to prove herself to the board, she also needs and wants to prove herself to Cade and show that she can become the best female Head Coach out there despite what the rumors say.  He needs to prove to others as well that he can still be an amazing football player. Cade wants to see if there is a something between them. In a way, so does she, but can she? Being with Cade, Angie will be in the public’s eye at all times, something she wants to avoid since she loves her privacy.  She would have to give up everything she loves and everything she worked so hard for.

Will Angie be able to put down some walls and let Cade in? Will she be able to give everything up to be with him? Will Cade be willing to make major sacrifices to be with Angie? Will she be able to give in to being in the public’s eye to be with him? Will Angie be able to prove herself to everyone and get the Head Coach position? Will Cade be able to get past his pain and be able to play football again?

I really enjoyed this book and I recommend you put it on your list to read. Not only did I like the main characters, I really fell for the supporting characters. Jackie does a great job introducing us and getting us acquainted with Rachel, Warren, her father, Coach Harvey and even the sleaze Donnelly. I can’t wait to read about Rachel and Warren in the next book.

I received an ARC for my honest review.

REVIEW - STEALING HARPER by MOLLY McADAMS

SYNOPSIS:

Chase Grayson has never been interested in having a relationship that lasted longer than it took for him and the girl to get dressed again.  But then he stumbled into a gray-eyed girl whose innocence poured off her, and everything changed.  From the minute Harper opened her mouth to let him know just how much he disgusted her, he was hooked.

But a princess deserves a prince charming that can make her dreams come true.  Not a guy that can turn her life into a nightmare.

All good intentions go out the window when she starts to fall for the guy he’s come to view as a brother.  He’d wanted to protect her by keeping her away, but he can’t stand to see her with anyone else and he’ll do anything to make her his.  But when it comes down to Harper choosing between the two, will Chase have the strength to step back from the girl that has become his whole world if it means she’s happy?

Lines will be crossed.  Friendships will be put to the test.  And hearts will be shattered.

REVIEW:

As we all know, Chase and Brandon both fell in love with Harper.  Little did Harper know, she had fallen in love; not with just one guy, but with two.

I myself, had fallen in love with Chase Grayson immediately in Taking Chances.  The moment Harper laid eyes on him in Taking Chances, I knew I was a goner!!!  I was captivated by his cockiness, his arrogance, his charm, his sexy grin, his eyes, his bad boy image and his tattoos.

Chase was immediately drawn to Harper.  Harper on the other hand was attracted to him, but found his man-whoring ways repulsive.

"I'd had a girl thank me for letting her blow me earlier, and this girl
wouldn't even give me her name?" "Excuse me, Princess." ~ Chase

"Wrong thing to do sweetheart.  I always did love a challenge." ~ Chase

Chase knew he made her nervous, and he took every advantage of that.  I have to say, this is one of my favorite parts of both Taking Chances and Stealing Harper.  You could feel the connection between the two of them very early on.

"Well, well.  If it isn't the princess."
"I almost didn’t recognize you without a tramp attached."
"Would you like to change that?  I'm not up to my limit tonight yet."
"Oh, I'm sorry, but I don't have any STD's, I'm not your type."

From the moment Chase met Harper, he felt the need to protect her. I loved how Stealing Harper was written in Chase's POV.  I felt like we finally got to see who Chase Grayson really was; to see how he truly felt about Harper.  To understand why he pushed her away, telling her that she deserved a Prince Charming.

"You need someone who will cherish you, protect you, and take care
of  you.  Someone that realizes they'd never be able to find another you
in the world, no matter how hard they looked."

"That first night, I did realize I would never meet another girl like
you.  But you deserve someone who has waited for you as long as you
have waited for them.  And no matter how much I wish I could be that
      guy, I can't, Harper."   ~ Chase

My heart broke reading Stealing Harper.  I wanted Chase with Harper from the first time they laid eyes on each other.  Chase didn't think he was good enough for Harper, yet he couldn't stay away from her either.  He was drawn to her like a moth to a flame.

To read Chase's POV in Stealing Harper was definitely an eye opener to me.  I wish Chase would have been honest with his feelings about Harper from the very beginning.  Knowing that Brandon had asked him not once, but several times, if there was something going on with Chase and Harper or if Chase had feelings for Harper and Chase just kept denying it, frustrated me to no end!!!

"I hoped she understood that I was hers, completely and undeniably
forever.  That if I had all of this to do all over again, I would change
everything.  And that in any life, in any situation, I'd choose her.
      Every time." ~ Chase

Seeing the love triangle between Chase, Harper and Brandon pissed me off.  I wish Harper would have chosen one of the men, and let the other one go.  My heart was crushed and ripped out of my body multiple times watching what Chase was going through.  To see him love someone and have to watch that person be in love with someone else.    I have to say, Chase loved to torment Brandon about Harper.  Chase knew he would get a rise out of Brandon, and every time he did, it made him want Harper more.  (Read the excerpt I have below and you will see exactly what I am talking about.)

We all knew the outcome and what to expect from reading Taking Chances, but I still wasn't prepared for the emotional roller coaster that I was about to go on…  Molly McAdams left me speechless with Stealing Harper.  I have read Taking Chances at least 6 times, but I can honestly say, that I don’t know if I will be able to read Stealing Harper again.  Especially, not the last few pages of the book.  I had to stop reading it several times because I could not see through my tears.

I had to wait several days for my emotions to settle, so that I could do this review.  I still don’t feel like I have gained any type of closure from reading Stealing Harper.  I feel like my wounds are still open and I don't know if I will ever be able to move on.  I wish Molly didn't choose to write "the scene" that everyone knows I am referencing.  The only thing I can say that I feel a little bit better about, was knowing that Chase didn't drive away from his parent's house in a fury on that dreadful night.  I at least know what caused the accident.  However, reading the last several pages of the book was gut wrenching.  My heart broke over and over again reading what Chase was feeling during that moment.  With every breath he took, I felt as though I couldn't breathe.  I found myself holding my breath, as I read the words on the screen of my iPad… As I read the last line of the book, I was crushed… I was seriously "UGLY CRYING" !!!!

"Live, Princess, for me. I love you."

EXCERPT:

What is your deal? What do you gain from pissing me off?"

"Other than Princess underneath me when you're not around? Not a damn thing."

"You son of a bitch! If you ever touch her, I will kill you.  Do you get me?"

"Little late for that one."  I watched as he tried to control his anger. "Does she moan that loud when she's with you, too?"

"Are you serious right now?"  he roared, and slammed a fist down on the counter.

I shrugged and began walking out of the kitchen.  "I'll take that as a no."  He was breathing heavily and obviously trying to talk himself out of this fight, but I needed it.  I still hate that he has her, and I need the reminder that I never will.  "Looks like you're under performing, brother.  Better step your game up before she stays in my bed for good.  'Cause those moans and little noises she makes?  God… sweetest fuckin' thing you've ever heard."

Brandon was already rounding the island before I'd finished with the last sentence, but this time I was ready for him.  He was a skilled fighter, yeah.  But this wasn't the ring he was used to, this was over a girl I knew he had fallen in love with just as much as I had; so he wasn't thinking strategy.  He just wanted to hit something.  And that's exactly what I'd been hoping for.  He grabbed the collar of my shirt and slammed me up against the wall.  I'd been expecting a blow to the head, but he smashed his fist against the wall near my head instead.

"I will end you if you touch her~  stay the hell away, Chase!"

I waited until he took a step back before landing one on his jaw.  "Payback.  Sorry, no can do."

He slowly looked back at me, worked his jaw a couple times, and spit blood in my face.  'You can, and you will.  She's mine.  I'm not doing this with you; you're like a brother to me."  Brandon took a step back and shook his head before turning toward his hallway.

"No wonder she comes running for my bed.  Obviously, you can't finish what you start."

He froze midstep and stayed like that for a couple seconds before turning and charging at me.  He plowed into me, and I felt like all the air was knocked out of me from having him land on top of me.  Before I would take a deep enough breath, he rolled off and punched me hard in the stomach.

"Stay.  Away.  From Harper!"

"Not my fault --"  I wheezed and tried to take a deep breath-- "you can't make her --scream your name."

Just as Brandon leaned back to deliver another punch, arms were around him and pulling him back.  He turned and kicked my side as Derek and Dew pulled him away.  "We are done! You hear me?"

I struggled up and winced at the pain in my stomach.  God, these guys really need to quit stopping the fights.  Brandon ripped his arms away from the guys and scrambled up quickly before Zach was there, helping the first two keep him back, and Brad was in my face, pushing me toward my hall.

"You're such an ass, Chase.  Why can't you just leave him alone?"

"Because he's with my entire world."

EXCERPT:

I head toward the bedroom and find Alex sprawled out on the center of the bed.  I’m still pissed at her for dancing with him.  I don’t know what she was thinking.  I hate that fucker and seeing him with his hands on my girl was enough to send me over the edge.  I immediately wanted to walk over to them but I stopped, telling myself over and over that there would be no way I could control my temper if I went anywhere near him.

I kept my eyes on them, ready to pounce if he took it any further.  I started to cool down a little but deep shades of red clouded by vision when I saw him press his body closer to her.  My mind was made up; I was heading over to punch that idiot in the face if I got through the packed crowd.  I was still about ten feet away when I saw him press his lips to her cheek and it halted me in place; she let him do it.   Didn’t push him away or tell him to stop.  It took everything I had to not break his neck.   I was even more pissed at Alex for letting him do it.

I hate feeling this way.

“Dane,” she whispers, lifting her head from the pillow.   She glances at the clock. “You’re late getting home.”

Yeah, I had a couple drinks after work.  I needed them.  “It was busy,” I say, sitting on the edge of the bed to remove my shoes.

LOVE LOVE by BETH MICHELE -- REVIEW

SYNOPSIS:

Gabrielle Willis is smart. She's funny. And oh yes, she's a bit klutzy.

When Gabrielle left sunny California bound for the energy of Manhattan, she was willingly leaving the life she had known for the new life she would create. But was she really leaving something behind or was she running away?

On the outside, Gabrielle Willis has it all under control. A new life in Manhattan, a great roommate, and a good job. But she is haunted. Haunted by a memory she's tried to forget and by a family who's abandoned her. But what happens when what's on the outside is only an illusion and in perfect contradiction to what's buried deep within?

Enter Dane Rhodes. He's gorgeous, smart, and sexy as hell. Just what Gabby wants, or so she thinks. But when she meets Brad Dixon, the sweet guy with the crooked smile, he begins to make her see that the very thing she is trying to run from is the very thing that just may push her to see the light.

REVIEW:

LOVE LOVE is Beth Michele's debut novel and she did an excellent job with it. This is a great story about moving on from your past while accepting what the future holds.  I fell in love with the characters immediately.  The work was well written and flowed great.  At times I was laughing, crying, laughing again, and then there were times I had knots in my stomach.

Gabrielle "Gabby" Willis met the love of her life in high school and they continued to date all through college.  Clark Thompson swept Gabby off her feet and captured her heart. Clark was Gabby's rock. Gabby doesn't have the best relationship with her family.  Gabby feels as though her parents do not accept her for who she is.  Her mother is a total snob and thinks Gabby should live her life the way her mother wants her to live it.  Clark always told Gabby how much he loved her, how truly special she was.  Clark is absolutely swoon worthy.  Clark always knew the right things to say at the appropriate time.
"Your mom doesn't define you.  You define you, and from where I'm standing, you're doing a damn good job."
Let's see: you're smart
You're funny as hell
You're caring and kind
You're breathtakingly beautiful, so screw your mom.  I'd say you've defined yourself pretty well." ~ Clark
Gabby's life was turned upside down in one night.  Gabby and her best friend, Fran move to New York to start a new jobs.  Gabby was struggling from moving on from Clark.  Gabby shut down and didn't allow herself to feel or to be loved.
"He was the one who supported me when I fell on my ass and the one whose broad shoulders carried all my tears." ~ Gabby
Fran is the best friend that every girl wants and needs in their lives.  Fran was a "huge" support system for Gabby.  Fran was always there to listen to Gabby when Gabby needed to talk, she was always there to try and pick up the pieces of what once was Gabby's life.  Fran had me cracking up throughout the book. She had such a great personality and it was great getting to see her life unfold before my eyes as well.

One day while on her way to work, Gabby sees a gorgeous man, with green eyes, a muscular body and as she describes.. "he screamed sheet-clawing sex."  Ironic enough Gabby runs into Mr. Green Eyes again and learns his name is Dane Rhodes.  Gabby is immediately attracted to Dane and the feelings are mutual on Dane's part.  Things begin to develop between Gabby and Dane, but was it what she was looking for?  Was Dane what she needed to awaken what was dead inside of her? Gabby is sexually attracted to Dane, but could she want more? Was Gabby only looking for a no strings attached sex relationship from Dane?

Now let me introduce to you Brad Dixon.  Brad Dixon owns The Brew House, the coffee shop that Gabby frequents.  Gabby and Brad become friends and hit it off immediately.  Brad and Gabby begin to spend a lot of time together, they become really good friends, but Brad knows that Gabby isn't telling him something.  Brad just reminds her that if she ever needs to talk, he'll always be there for her.  Brad is a total sweetheart.  You can feel the connection between Brad and Gabby.  They were drawn to each other and they both begin to develop feelings for each other.  Brad is the first person that Gabby has had feelings for since Clark.  Does Clark still hold Gabby's heart?  Will Gabby allow Brad to hold her heart?  Will Gabby move on from Clark?  Will Gabby realize that life has no guarantees and she needs to make every moment count?

Like everyone, Brad has a past as well.  Brad has lost people that were very close to him.  Brad was lost, and Gabby awakened his heart.  Gabby allowed Brad to breathe again, to feel again, made him feel alive again. Both Gabby and Brad had tragic events in their past that had defined them for so long.  The only difference between Gabby and Brad was, Brad had let go of his past, Gabby hasn't. The only questions is, can Gabby?

Beth Michele did an outstanding job with LOVE LOVE. Overall, I recommend this book to others if you are looking for a quick read that will pull on the strings to your heart.

I was given an ARC for an honest review.
This book was reviewed by Heather.

Excerpt:

We were hanging out on the makeshift dance floor.  Clark’s hands were roaming, our hips were swaying, and we were all dancing our free little hearts out.  The fuzzy feeling in my head caused me to react as Clark pressed his firm body against mine.  I wrapped my arms around his neck and plunged my tongue into his mouth, relishing the familiar taste of him. When I pulled back, I could see Fran staring at us, probably because we were practically making out in public.  I didn’t care, Clark turned me on in ways I never imagined, and there wasn’t a moment that went by that I didn’t crave his touch, his lips, his everything.

He leaned in close to my ear and his warm breath blew a breeze my way, causing me to shiver.  “Angel, let’s get out of here.  I need to be alone with you.”  The look in his eyes told me he wanted me, not to mention the stiffness I felt pressing against my thigh.  I wanted him, too.  “There’s somewhere I want to take you,” his hot breath whispered and his musky scent overtook my senses.  When he looked at me with those persuasive baby blues, it was hard to say no.

LOVE ME by DIANE ALBERTS

Summary:

Thomas Jones has come to Vegas to win yet another account for his marketing company. But when he sits across from beautiful and sensual Brianna Falk to deliver his pitch, his desire to leave Vegas as quickly as possible is replaced by the need to get closer to her. Yet she resists his charm.
Brianna knows a date with Thomas could jeopardize her job, but he’s so maddening and insistent, she has a hard time denying him just one date. But that’s all it can be: one date. Because she has to protect her job and her secrets, even if it means giving up a chance at a life she never thought she’d have again.

Review:

Intense! That’s all I have to say.  The intensity of this book is off the wall.  You can feel the intensity and the chemistry between Thomas and Brianna from across the room; it’ll send shivers down your spine.  Yes, this book will have your emotions thrown for a loop, and you will never know what hit you.  It’s a quick read you won’t want to put down.

Thomas first met Brianna outside on the busy street on Las Vegas while on his way to a business meeting.  She looked preoccupied so he thought he would be nice and save her from crashing into a newspaper stand.  She had such a sharp, businesslike exterior, but yet very feisty and sassy.  There was something about her he found her very attractive and sexy; something that ignited deep down inside of him; something he was lacking for so many years.  Then he watched her walk away never to see her again.

Thomas was shocked when he realized his business meeting was with Brianna, whom he just ran into on his way to the restaurant.  While trying to maintain his composure to snag the biggest contract, he couldn’t help wonder about Brianna.  There was something about her, something that made him interested, what was her story?  She was different.  He needed to keep this strictly business but he just couldn’t help but wonder, he just wanted more, just one more date to see where this would go.  This wasn’t like him. The last time he wanted more he got burned, bad.

Brianna definitely kept it strictly business as much as she could.  But Thomas was very persistent.  He was really good at his job and he knew exactly what he was talking about, there was no doubt about that.  He had an answer for everything. Thomas keeps insisting on taking Brianna out on a date to see if they have anything going on for them, but Brianna cannot take anything more than a business relationship.

Brianna pretty much had no choice to a “second meeting” when Thomas wants a tour of her hotel.  They hop into the cab and head to Thomas’ hotel for dinner when one thing leads to another.  It is at that moment, their passion for one another comes alive, that pent up connection is released and their feelings are poured out through that one long kiss.  The fire burns in them that they skipped dinner and head right into Thomas’ suite where they have fiery HOT sex.  They want each other soo badly; they don’t even make it to the bedroom!  Even I felt the intensity from the kiss to the sex part!  Once Brianna realizes what she has done, she runs away, fast without looking back.

What Brianna had done is not like her at all; it isn’t who she is.  She doesn’t know what came over her because she has never ever done or felt the need to do that ever before.  She is a responsible person and has three children to care for, who need her at home.  No one has been able to make her feel this way in a very long time, no one since Michael.  Not until now, not until Thomas.  There was something about Thomas that made her feel alive again, made her feel,  helped fill a void that felt missing since the day Michael died.

What did Thomas do to make her run?  He couldn’t wrap his head around it.  He had such a messed up past that he regretted every day of his life, but who didn’t have a messed up past?  You learn from it and you don’t make the same mistakes again. He was married and hated his ex-wife for what she did to him.  She played him for a fool, put false thoughts into his head, and turned him against the people he loved. And till this day, he hated himself for it; regretted himself for doing it.  He lived a miserable life because of it.  After all that she put him through, he deserved happiness in his life. He deserved someone to love him unconditionally.

There is just something about Brianna that Thomas cannot stay away.  He must get to know her more, so he goes to talk to her at her office.  They don’t start off by talking, but by having HOT desk sex. They the talking starts and they agree to start things off slowly.  After revealing the truth, Thomas does not run but accepts the fact that she is a widow with three children and accepts that fact and would love to get to know her more.  He is only in town for two more weeks and would like to see where things take them.  He is not making any promises but they will cross that bridge when they get there.  There is more to Thomas than it seems.  He a very caring person and will put the kids and Brianna’s safety and happiness before his very own.

Brianna grew up with a lot of insecurities and they have slowly come back to haunt her. At the start of her relationship with Thomas, she thought he was using her to get her to sign the contract. Now she is terrified he will leave at the end of his two weeks and move back to California; leaving her and the kids alone. He has slowly become a fixture in their lives that it will not only crush her heart, but also her children. She is so used to rejection and people leaving her, she honestly feels that Thomas will do that very soon. It seems that they may have moved a little too fast and she terrified of what will happen.

Will Thomas pick up and leave Las Vegas for good leaving her and he kids? Will Thomas find happiness in Brianna and her family? Will Brianna be able to completely love Thomas? Will Thomas be able to let go of his past hurt and be happy again? Will Brianna finally stop running?

My heart broke for Brianna many, many times while reading this book.  She was at a tough place. She felt like she needed to move on for herself, but she felt like she couldn’t.  She was really torn and I could feel her emotions fighting herself on it.  She couldn’t do it to Michael and she couldn’t do it to her kids. But she needed it for herself.  She hated herself when she and Thomas first had passionate sex.  I hated that she felt that way.  She felt soo conflicted at the beginning of her feelings with Thomas, she just didn’t know what to do about them. But when she realized her feelings for Thomas were much deeper than a fling, she didn’t feel as guilty. She finally started to realize she deserved happiness too.  Thomas knew what he wanted from the beginning and he didn't stop till he got it.  Great job Diane! Looking forward to your next story in the series!
