It’s the release day of A Lover’s Lament by KL Grayson & BT Urruela! I love this fantastic contemporary romance so much. Today, we have an excerpt and a fantastic giveaway, so be sure to check out all of the release day festivities!
About A Lover’s Lament: In a matter of seconds my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist. In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I’d find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger. I didn’t expect him to write back. I wasn’t prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn’t ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I’d never known before. Sergeant Devin Ulysses Clay did what I couldn’t: he put the shattered pieces of my heart back together, restoring my faith in humanity and teaching me how to live again. But now that I’m whole, I have a decision to make. Do I return to my life as I knew it and the fiancé I left behind, or do I walk away from it all for the only man to ever break my heart? *** I’ve been living in hell, but you won’t hear me complain. These men depend on me, as I do them, and this brotherhood is the only family I’ve ever known. The Army saved me from a callous mother and a life on the wrong side of the tracks that was quickly spiraling out of control. So unlike most of the men in my platoon, going home wasn’t something I longed for. I was content overseas, spending my days defending this country that gave me my life back. Fighting became my new normal … until her. A letter from Katie Devora—a letter that I almost didn’t open. Her words put a fire back inside of me that I didn’t know I’d lost. She gave me hope during a time when I was fighting every day just to stay alive, and now it’s time I fight for her.
Review
“That’s the great thing about love…it finds you. And when its true
love, it doesn’t go away, and you just know. You don’t have to wonder or guess,
because it just…is.”
Katie Devora found her soulmate all those years ago in grade
school. She and Devin Clay were enemies at first, but then they became
inseparable. Though, they came from different backgrounds, when together, they
couldn’t have been more connected. She has been his rock and anchor when things
haven’t been so well at home. They went through everything together, their
relationship growing from friendship to love. They thought it was forever until
one day he left without a trace.
“The second she dove onto my back and brought me tumbling to the
ground, I knew I’d met my match.”
After
Devin left, Katie’s life hasn’t been much of the same. She tried her best to
move on, in which she did, but she could never love like she did Devin. Katie
went to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse, while becoming engaged to her
other childhood best friend, Wyatt. He was there to help her pick up the pieces
when Devin up and left. But when a tragic moment occurs in Katie’s life it puts
her into tailspin. She becomes mad and angry at everyone, at the world. Pushing
everyone away, working herself to death and not dealing with the problem at
hand. Katie is full of hurt, anger, resentment and doesn’t know how to deal
with them. She is slowing shutting down. One of her tasks is to write to a
military soldier in hopes that it will bring her closure and help answer some
questions for her but also a task in which she is dreading. But as she
gets to the list, she can’t believe seeing a name she hasn’t seen in years.
“The world truly does work in mysterious ways.”
Devin
Clay hasn’t been handed the best childhood growing up. Without a father and you
can pretty much call her an absent mother Katie was the only person he could
ever count on. She is what got him through the tough times. But when it got to
the future, he didn’t see him as good enough for her. He didn’t think he had
enough to offer her. He didn’t deserve her so he did what he thought he needed
to do. Devin had no choice, he followed his mother, they moved, where things
went downhill from there. When one night he had a close call and it all hit
him. Devin got his wake up call. Decided to turn his life around and joined the
army. That did it for him. He met his group of brothers were they would do
anything for each other. Not any one day is the same overseas. They have their
ups and downs. They see things they wish they could unseen, lose brothers they
wish they could protect, but they do it to keep safe. Devin has nothing back
home. The only thing keeping him going is his band of brothers, until he
receives a letter from someone from his past.
“Katie’s emails have provided a link to my past life, to memories
of childhood mischief and young love.”
Writing
letters was one step in the healing process. Katie needs to help herself. She
also needs to repair her relationship with her mom and her sister. As well as
her relationship with Wyatt, if there is still a relationship with him with the
way she has been pushing him far away from her.
“My heart is yours, I gave you my soul a long time ago.”
At first
Katie thought it would be a bit awkward sending Devin a letter after not
speaking or hearing from him after all these years, but she just decided to let
it all go. She tells him what she wanted to all those years, all about the
tragedy, all her anger, her questions, her feelings. Katie holds nothing back
and doesn’t really care if he responds back or not. But Devin is excited to
receive her letters. It gives him a bit of hope and even though he is miles and
miles away, he hopes he can help her. Through letters they get to know each
other again, starting with the basics, then moving on to deeper and heavier
subjects. It starts with letters, that move on to emails, which eventually move
on to phone calls. It seems as if Katie and Devin have never lost touch with
each other. The connection is still there, like they’re just picking up right
where they left off. Scaring both of them to death. Devin is helping Katie live
life again and Katie is giving Devin something to look forward too. A little
bit of hope after a hard days work.
“Not only has she infiltrated my brain ,she’s reclaimed the empty
spot in the center of my chest too.”“Live your life, not just for yourself but
also for your friends who have lost their lives. Take them with you wherever
you go and do all the things that they’ll never get to do.”
Will
Katie and Wyatt be able to repair what they once had? Or will they have lost it
forever? Will Katie be able to find her old self again after the tragic loss?
Can Devin be able to help her find her way and give her the answers that she
needs to heal? Will Katie and Devin’s relationship be repaired? Can Katie
finally forgive Devin for what happened all those years ago? Can Katie and
Devin find their way back to each other? Will first love be able to conquer all?
“Not only have I let myself get close enough to the one person who
could hurt me again, but on top of that, he’s a soldier- someone who could
easily be ripped away from me at any moment.”
I
absolutely loved how this book was told in both point of views, that way we see
the different sides of things. I definitely saw the instant connection between
Katie and Devin and my heart broke for her and the situations that she had to
endure. My heart went for Devin as well. The things that he had to face… he
didn’t have an easy life as a child, and he still faced many challenges as an
adult. This book truly does show the second chance love story and it was very
well written. I loved how even after all those years apart it truly shows that
you can still have that connection with someone. I definitely felt a lot of
emotions while reading this book. You both did a great job incorporating the
secondary characters as well in this book. Everyone definitely needs a
BFF like Katie had… I know I have one like her and I love her to death! Great
job writing this book!
