Behind His Eyes: Truth by Aleatha Romig (Review)

BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH is the second of CONSEQUENCES SERIES three reading companions, by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig. It is recommended to be read after completing all of the CONSEQUENCES SERIES: Consequences, Truth, and Convicted. It is not a standalone book and should not be read as such.

This reading companion explores the thoughts and motivations of Anthony Rawlings and his struggle to accept the truth behind the consequences. It is not intended as a total rewrite of TRUTH, but meant to enhance the reader’s understanding. BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH contains significant scenes from the novel TRUTH, as experienced from Anthony’s point of view. It also contains never before read, behind the scenes information, a glossary of the characters, and a timeline which grows from Consequences to include the array of new characters and revelations found in the pages of Truth.

BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH is the continued journey inside the mind of the man who supplied and survived the consequences. This companion allows readers the opportunity to witness first hand as Anthony’s world changes forever. His rules and control begin to slip away, threatened by the most unlikely foes—something completely unfamiliar.

Can something as pure as love and forgiveness wreak havoc on his well-planned existence?

BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH, because there is more to learn about a man who:
Once upon a time, signed a napkin that he knew was a contract. As an esteemed businessman, he forgot one very important rule—he forgot to read the fine print. It wasn’t an acquisition to own another person as he’d previously assumed. It was an agreement to acquire a soul.
—Aleatha Romig, CONVICTED

REVIEW:

Behind His Eyes: Truth

The truth will set you free. Unfortunately, sometimes it drops you into a free fall. Just as Claire is settling into her new and unexpected freedom and reestablishing her life, cracks start to show in Tony’s well-ordered life. Tony has been in control of his life and destiny for a long time, all the while he has controlled the destinies of many others. Tony is the chess master in this game, but Tony forgot the most important thing about chess, it’s the Queen who decides the fate of the game.

Tony never intended to let Claire go. When she disappears, he panics. He has known practically every move she made from the time of her parents’ deaths, and not knowing starts to bring some realizations about his true feelings for Claire. Tony knows in order to be a part of Claire’s life, he’s going to have to make some concessions. Now, this doesn’t mean he isn’t above manipulating a few things to make that happen. The most important thing for Tony is controlling his temper. He isn’t used to people challenging him, but with Claire, the challenge is one of the things he most admires about her.

Claire becoming amiable and doing as she was told made Tony proud, but it was always her spirit that he loved. Yes, loved. Tony finally realizes that what he felt for Claire really was love. With that realization comes the determination to prove it to her. But revenge isn’t done with Tony and Claire just yet. As we know from Truth, when the true mastermind is revealed, she doesn’t miss the opportunity to punish the children and the children’s children for the sins of their ancestors. The problem that has always come up in the plans for retribution is Claire’s unwillingness to lie down in defeat.

Claire rises to the occasion to protect those she loves. She knows there is only so much she can protect Tony from, but she’ll do what is required to protect their child. When Tony realizes the depth of betrayal in his life, he once again finds Claire. Claire has already forgiven Tony; she long ago realized there was no rationalization for why she loves Tony, and at this point she is beyond caring about the why. As Tony faces the truth of his actions, he doesn’t understand how Claire can truly love and forgive him for the things he’s done to her.

Once again the glimpse into Tony’s mind is enlightening. As hard as it was to read his POV of Consequences, BHE: Truth shows more of his vulnerability. It’s almost sad to see an almost fifty year old man discover what love is for the first time. Love in his world has always been conditional. Now the question is can Tony forgive himself for the things he’s done and fight to regain his life, while keeping the relationships he didn’t know he wanted from falling victim to his past.
