by Laura Lee

How were they supposed to know that one night would change everything?

Devyn has life all mapped out. She just needs to accomplish one more thing before graduating college and becoming a full-fledged adult—lose her virginity. And who better to assist her than her best friend, Riley?

Riley is the self-proclaimed king of fling. His college years have been filled with meaningless hookups until the one night that ruined him for all other women. The one night he spends with his best friend, Devyn. Right before he screws it all up.

Balls to the wall, baby!

Now five years later, Riley is determined to atone for his mistakes and prove that he can be the man that Devyn deserves. Little does he know that Devyn’s been keeping a secret from him all these years. A big secret. Now he has to figure out how to win back the only girl he’s ever loved while navigating the pitfalls of her unexpected revelation.

Deal Breakers is filled with lots of laughs, a sexy romance, and an overflowing swear jar.

“Love deeper and laugh harder than you ever thought possible. Never settle for anything less.”

Devyn Summers has always been focused with school and hasn’t let much of the boys get into the way of her studying. Primary focus in her life; get good grades, finish school, land a good paying job. Sounds pretty normal for your typical college student right? It’s always been a goal though for Devyn since her parents died and it’s just been her and her older brother, Brad. Devyn has a natural beauty to her that most girls around the school don’t have. She doesn’t need all the make up or the fancy clothes for the guys to notice her. What makes her the ultimate package? She hangs out at the sports bars, drinks beer and is into all the sports known to man. Just like one of the guys. Enter Riley McIntyre.

“You should try being impulsive more often. You never know what could happen.”

Riley is screwed the minute he meets Devyn. He hasn’t met a woman like her, ever. Her natural self is what he first notices, but what fully captivates him is that she is like one of the guys. All the girls that he has ever met have only wanted one thing from him. I mean don’t get him wrong, he hasn’t denied any of them. He hasn’t found the need to since he isn’t in the market for giving anything else to them and they know it. But with Devyn, he feels comfortable opening up to her. He tries and tries everything to get closer to her but she constantly friend-zones him and that’s where they will remain.
“She challenges me like no other. She keeps me grounded. She makes me want to be the best version of myself. I know that I’d be an entirely different man without her in my life.”
For the next few years in college they will remain the best of friends. It’s not like Riley hasn’t tried to get past that stage. Devyn keeps on denying every pass he makes at her. He tries. She denies. So he sleeps around. It’s a constant pattern for him. The typical player. Plus she is in no place to commit herself to anyone. She is focused on school. He is focused on getting laid. I mean don’t get it wrong, Riley is a very intelligent student, he just isn’t a commitment type of person and Devyn knows it. She doesn’t want to be a notch on his bedpost like all the others. It’s as if you can sense the feelings for each other is there, but it’s like they are both afraid to admit it. But when it’s almost time to enter the real world, Devyn propositions Riley with something. She asks the one person she can trust in the world with one thing. To free her of her virginity.
“I’m done pretending that you’ll come to your senses one day and realize what you gave up!” “After everything we’d been through we knew each other better than anyone, yet you chose to run.”
Riley makes it the best night of Devyn’s night. Then poof! They move on with their lives and don’t speak to each other again. One of the biggest mistakes of Riley’s life. Five years have passed. Some goals have changed. Some goals have been achieved. Hearts are broken. Lives have definitely been altered. But mistakes are still being regretted. Riley moves back to see if he can win Devyn back after all this time, but realizes he could be too late.  Devyn seems to have moved on. Riley can’t move past the regret after all these years. He is still miserable over it. She was the one that should have never gotten away. He wants to make things right with her and will do him hardest to fight for her, even if that means fighting dirty. Riley feels that she’s settling with the guy she is with, that he can’t make her happy. But she won’t give him the time of day. She just can’t seem to, but yet he can tell he still affects her.
“Never sell yourself short and settle for someone out of comfort or obligation. Make sure that when you do settle down one day it’s with someone who knows your worth and makes you feel everything you’re supposed to feel with the person you spend the rest of your life with.”

I loved absolutely loved this book. I felt bad for Devyn and the situations she had to go through in college, especially about her parents. But she met Riley and he was always there for her. Even though it was just as a friendship level. He made an amazing friend. He could have made an amazing lover if he got over that fear. They practically were a couple, which made it frustrating at times! This book has you feeling so many different emotions, it’s crazy. Some of the things Riley did, I wanted to kick his ass but I was still rooting team Riley all the way. I love the idea of fighting for a second chance in love. You have to give it your all to try to win it in the end.

“My God, woman.”

“Too much?” She crosses her arms over her chest. “I wanted something that made me feel sexy. It’s stupid and trashy, isn’t it?”

Uncrossing her arms and nodding towards her body I say, “That could never be considered stupid or trashy. I’m pretty sure it’s the best damn idea you’ve ever had.”

She laughs. “Really?”

I nod enthusiastically. “Uh huh, definitely. Best. Idea. Ever.”
