REVIEW:

“You know the saying? ‘If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it never was?’”~ Jailyn

Wow…Megan has done it yet again. I have been emotionally invested in each of the characters since Easy to Love You and she has made me fall even more in love with them. They have matured so much, especially Hailey and Mason, both individually and as a couple. I laughed, cried, hell I even got so frustrated I wanted to throw my Kindle! Megan does an amazing job personally connecting me with the story to the point where I’m literally sitting at the edge of my seat anticipating the emotional roller coaster ride.

Hailey has always had trust issues. She grew up in a house surrounded by negativity and was constantly told she wasn’t wanted. She was reminded daily that it was her fault her dad left, her fault for her parents’ divorce, her dad did not want her, her sister blamed her, that no one wanted her. It was embedded in her brain that she wasn’t worthy of anyone. Her mom worked her ass off just to put a roof over her head. When times would get bad she always went to her best friend Kenzie’s house. Kenzie is the sister she could always count on, but she wasn’t the one who she seeked comfort from. She always found comfort in Mason. It was his bed that she slept better in at night. He seemed to make things brighter for her, make her feel more at ease.

Mason always knew his way around the ladies. But there was one he knew he couldn’t have and had to stay away from. Hailey was his sister’s best friend, so young and so innocent, yet there was something about her that captivated him. Since the first time Hailey climbed into his bed broken, he knew from that moment on he needed to protect her. He needed to protect her from what went on at home, from anyone that could hurt her.

The Cahill Family has always been very close-knit, which is one of the many things I love about them. They will have you laughing and crying with them and leave you wanting to be a part of that wonderful family. Hunter and his family, as well as Hailey, have been welcomed with open arms and have pretty much become a permanent fixtureThey pretty much do everything together and the love that they have for each other truly shows. Mason has always put the needs of his family, protecting them, and their happiness before his own; always, no questions asked, regardless of the consequences. Second in his life, comes baseball, it’s his career choice and he’s great at it.

Mason and Hailey have been drawn to each other since they first met, but they knew, even at a young age that they could never be. Hailey felt safe with Mason, he made her feel things no one could ever made her feel. She knew that Mason would always have her heart and he knew that he would one day break it. Mason has never had any problems with girls, they were always after him and he was never one to deny them. Heck, he was young, immature, and popular, so why wouldn’t he? Although it crushed Hailey, she knew it was never meant to be and needed to learn to move on.

“Why couldn’t you put me first, Mason? Why couldn’t I have just been enough for you to pick me first?” ~ Hailey

Together, after fighting their feelings and growing up a little, their relationship is extremely hot, loud, playful, and all over the place. Regardless, the love that they have for each other goes deeper than anything. It shows just by the way they look at each other: they are truly happy. Mason adores Hailey. She feels loved and she has finally put her walls down. She completely trusts Mason, even when he is on the road and is caught surrounded by other women. She knows his heart belongs to her. Preparing for Kenzie and Hunter’s wedding, Hailey can’t wait till her time comes. But Mason still puts his family and baseball before Hailey. He finds out a secret and instead of being honest about it and telling Hailey, he keeps it to himself and tries to figure it out until after the wedding to protect his family even if that means hurting Hailey in the process.

Hailey finds Mason in a very compromising position and when he doesn’t want to explain the truth just yet, her walls go right back up. She runs, just like she always does instead of facing it. She doesn’t trust him enough to trust his judgment and that just breaks my heart. But yet, he just as easily lets her go…

Can Hailey and Mason get past this part of their relationship? Is Mason ever going to be able to tell Hailey the truth about what happened? Will Mason ever put Hailey first? Can Hailey see past all this and forgive Mason? Will her walls finally come back down? Will she learn to completely trust Mason? Is their relationship worth putting back together or are they forever done? Will they let their relationship affect their relationship with Kenzie?

“You’re the one for me, Hailey. I’m letting you go for now but know you will always be the one for me. You can hate me all you want. You’re my mirror; you make me see things that no one else can, not even Coop. You challenge me, you tear me down, you build me back up. Somewhere along the way you lost your mirror, me. When you’re ready to see it again you know where to find me.” ~Mason

I became really frustrated with Hailey several times because I felt she acted pretty immaturely about some of the situations that happened. I just wanted to go over and smack some sense into her. Some of the stuff was pretty avoidable if she just handled it differently and confronted Mason about them. But she wasn’t the only one to blame, it does take two to make a relationship work. Mason should have been completely honest with her from the start and trusted her enough to tell her everything. He could have tried harder to keep her, he let her go too easily, it’s like she wasn’t worth that much to fight his all for. I loved watching Mason grow as an individual. It shows that people can do a full 180 if they want to make their lives better all because of one person. I absolutely loved the family. We even get a glimpse of the beautiful McCormick wedding. I felt like I was a part of it just from reading the book. Another amazing job well done, Megan. I will be anxiously waiting for Cooper and Jailyn’s story!

EXCERPT:

As soon as my feet hit the dance floor the perfect song for Hailey and I comes on, Changed By You by Between The Trees. I heard when I was traveling to one of my away games. I wanted to have Hailey listen to it but that never happened. Maybe this is a sign for us after all.

Hailey’s back is turned towards me; I don’t see her arm candy anywhere so I know I am in the clear, at least for now. I walk up behind her, slide both my arms around her and rest my hands low on her stomach. Her body responds like it always has, and she melts into me; fitting together like puzzle pieces.

I whisper in her ear, “Listen to the words. Just listen.”

She nods, for once not fighting me. We start moving, slowly. Very slowly. As the words start talking about change, taking care, melting fears away, reaching inside and seeing the real person, being the one. As the song continues her body becomes stiff and she trembles.

I start turning her around, never giving her enough space to push away from me, afraid I’d lose our connection. “You’re the one for me, Hailey. I’m letting you go for now but know you will always be the one for me. You can hate me all you want.” I kiss her forehead. “You’re my mirror; you make me see things that no one else can, not even Coop. You challenge me, you tear me down, and you build me back up. Somewhere along the way you lost your mirror, me. When you’re ready to see it again you know where to find me.”
