WOW… Penelope did a phenomenal with this book. The storyline flowed nicely and captivated me from the beginning. I haven’t pulled an all nighter reading in a while but yet I devoured this in one sitting.
The book is told in two parts, the past and the present. And we see both view from Raven and Gavin.
We are walked into both their lives. Two young adults from two different sides of society. Gavin is the “rich boy” while Raven is the daughter of the housekeeper who worked for them. Gavin and Raven instantly connected, forming a beautiful friendship. Although they are from two different backgrounds, they have a common understanding of how they want their lives to be. There’s a life that is paved for you with what you are expected to do and a life that has purpose. They want a life with purpose and makes you happy and no one else understands that. I absolutely loved the chemistry between them. They just fit. like they were meant for each other. I loved them both together before anything romantic happened. Gavin, he was so amazing with her. When others have been nothing but rude and treated her like scum, Gavin was there to put a stop to things. Gavin treated Raven like an equal and not just the housekeepers daughter.
I love the strength that Raven has. She’s a very selfless person and will give everything her all. She will put others and their needs before herself. Raven has had to face the scrutiny and hatred for Gavin’s mom and those in his circle, but she endured it all. She hasn’t had the easiest life growing up, but she doesn’t show it. She is so optimistic. When life throws her and her family a curveball, it does test her strength. While dealing with that personal battle, she is fighting the battle of love. In Gavin and Raven’s eyes, love is all they need to get through it all. But can love alone be the perfect solution? When one selfless situation tears them apart, it alters the course of their future.
Gavin and Raven meet again ten years later when Gavin returns home to visit his sick father. Raven has been caring for his father all this time, with no contact from Gavin up until his return. With past still haunting Raven, it is hard for her to face Gavin. Gavin has definitely moved on from things, leaving Raven to deal with big regrets. Once they face each other again, the past all comes floating back. They never had the closure they needed back then. With closure they will all be able to completely move forwards in their lives. But what happens when the past comes back to haunt them? We follow their journey, now in the present, reliving their past. They catch up on life and the truth about the past gets revealed. Will the past change the course in things again for them? Will it be their time at a second chance? Or will the past release the ghosts that haunt them so they can finally move on?
The secondary characters were great in this book. Raven’s best friend has always stuck by her no matter what. Every girl needs her in their lives. Raven’s mom. She was such a hard worker and did everything she could to provide for Raven as a single mother. Raven’s mom does go through some stuff, which hits a tough spot for me. But Raven handled it all wonderfully. Gavin’s mom… I truly hated her. With a passion. i won’t deny that I wished bad things to happen to her. Gavin’s dad was a godsend. He treated Raven and her mom with such respect. Gavin’s brother, I hated at first. I continued to hate him until the truth comes out, then my feelings towards him changed.
I definitely laughed at their antics together, I cried (a lot), I got frustrated with the characters, I felt it all. It was as if I was a part of the book. Penelope did a great job making me feel all the feels.
The Day He Came Back is a true tale of second chances. One that will captivate your heart. It will make you believe in second chances and forgiveness.
