When her best friend disappears, Stella investigates—despite warnings from her police detective boyfriend—following a twisted trail that leads her through the city’s most dangerous and forsaken precincts. There she uncovers something more sinister than she could have imagined: a shadowy organization known as The Light, led by the enigmatic Father Gabriel.

As Sara struggles to understand her place in the strange world she’s awakened to—an oppressive cult demanding unquestioning obedience—and her feelings for Jacob, the husband she can’t recall and whose harsh and tender attentions confuse and beguile her, Stella risks all to discover the truth. But enlightenment always comes with a price...

SYNOPSIS

Secrets.
So many secrets. Nothing but secrets.

I started another life with a new husband, thirteen new sister wives and a new place to call home.
But the secrets weigh on me, on all of us.
And every secret leads back to the Prophet the, self-proclaimed, mouthpiece of God. The man I’ve worshiped since childhood, the man we obey without question.
And he’s the man who will destroy us all.

I must reveal his secrets.
Prove his betrayal, his lies and his deceit.
I will not be silenced, no matter how hard he tries.

And I will never give up. Ever.

REVIEW by CA Borgford:

Returning to the compound in Mother Before Wife is an eye-opening Returning to the compound in Mother Before Wife is an eye-opening experience. In Wife Number Seven, true love and romance prevailed. In Mother Before Wife we see that everything is not as it should be, and it’s up to Aspen to unearth the truth—for her children and for herself.

This is Aspen’s story. We find her happily saying good riddance to Lehi and joining a new family. Sounds simple right? Not even close. Aspen is a strong woman who displays immense strength and courage throughout her story. She’s lives a simple and focused life of servitudeA life where keeping sweet and worshipping the Prophet is expectedWhen secrets come to light, Aspen finds herself realigning her priorities and walking a fine line of danger.

Ms. Brown has crafted another well-written adventure with outstanding character development. So outstanding that I wanted to break things. I had to put this book down so many times I lost count. Always going back to it because I just had to know. I guess I have a bit of Aspen in me and couldn’t let him get the best of me. This is an engaging and interesting story.

EXCERPT

The Prophet linked his hands behind his back, tilting his head a bit as he studied me. “The cake is delicious. Did you make it?”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it, but no, Sarah is the baker of the family. I do make a delicious roast chicken.”

“I should like to try it sometime.”

“I’d be honored.”

Another pause, and my heart raced. There had to be a reason for this conversation. Perhaps he would explain his actions, although the chances of that were slim. The Prophet answered to no one. Who was I to think he’d feel any obligation to explain himself to me?

Get a grip, Aspen. You’re nothing special, just a woman, like any other on this compound.

“My mother is certainly taken with you.”

“Thank you. I like her very much.”

The Prophet stared back at the bench where Jorjina was watching birds chirping from the tree above her. “Well, she always has liked Paul’s wives.”

“Excuse me?” I asked, wondering if I’d misunderstood his last statement.

“How’s your dog?” he asked, clearing his throat. When he turned his attention back toward me, his face hardened.

“Scout?” I asked, my throat dry. “He’s fine. He’s off playing with Jeremiah, I’m sure. They’re attached at the hip.” I attempted to divert the conversation in another direction, but I failed.

“Yes, your boy seems rather attached, doesn’t he?”

“They’re the best of friends.”

“You know, I was surprised to see the dog off the grounds of his home. Is he allowed to roam?”

“No, sir, he normally stays in our yard. Someone left the gate open and he just got out, I guess.”

“Ah, I see.”

“I’ve asked my sister wives to double-check that they always lock the gate, so it shouldn’t happen again.”

Please understand what I’m saying. Please don’t punish my family for what I saw . . . what I think I saw.

“I should hope so. It would be a shame if he wandered away; it seems your little boy would surely follow. You said yourself they’re attached at the hip.” He tipped his head forward and raised both eyebrows. “Am I making myself clear?”

Jeremiah? No! Don’t you touch my baby!

I swallowed hard as sweat popped out on my forehead, my neck, my hands. The Prophet was threatening me, threatening to harm my little boy. In sheer panic, I gave the only answer I could possibly offer.

“Yes, sir.”

“Good.” He clasped his hands together. “Now, I believe I’ll have another slice of cake.”

He stared at me, waiting for me to serve him. I was nothing if not perceptive to expectations. The Prophet had threatened me, and then demanded dessert. His eyes were dull and lifeless, as if threatening to harm my child was just another part of his daily role as Prophet.

In that moment, something shifted within me. If the Prophet felt the need to threaten me, to threaten the life of my youngest child, then he was up to no good. This became quite clear.

And at that realization, I grew angry. Furious.

For weeks, I’d hoped that I was wrong, that I misunderstood. But I knew without a shadow of a doubt that if I’d misinterpreted what I’d witnessed, then there would be no need for the warning that had just taken place.

So I harnessed my bravery within, took a breath, and looked him square in the eye. “Of course, dogs do have minds of their own, don’t they?”

The Prophet’s jaw tensed and his Adam’s apple bounced as he swallowed. “I suppose they do.”

“We try to control him, but he’s just an animal, after all.”

The Prophet stared at me in silence.

“I’ll get that cake for you,” I said with a nod, and went to retrieve a plate with the largest piece I could find as my heart pounded furiously in my chest.

As I walked back to join him, I felt strong, powerful. I’d called his bluff and gotten away with it.

Or had I? Panic replaced my confidence as my heart continued to thump so hard within me that I felt my lungs could deflate completely. The pressure within my chest was almost unbearable.

What on earth did I just do? Have I put my baby at risk? What kind of mother am I?

Apologize, Aspen. Repent! Make things right!

I returned to the Prophet, placed the plate in his hands, and opened my mouth to speak. Before I could utter a single syllable, he gripped the plate with one hand and my forearm with the other. He squeezed hard, painfully, and I gasped.

“Watch your step, Aspen. Your life can change in an instant.”

“Yes, sir.” I looked around the yard to see Paul watching my interaction with his brother. A concerned and confused look crossed his handsome face as he studied me.

Keep sweet. Keep sweet. Keep sweet.

“If you’ll excuse me, I should join Paul and my sister wives.”

“Of course.” The Prophet nodded, releasing my arm and turning his attention to the cake on his plate. He glanced down and smiled. “Ah, a corner piece. My favorite.”

He plunged his fork into the thick icing and placed the large bite of cake in his mouth, such a carefree action considering the tension that loomed between us just seconds before. While I required every ounce of strength within me to join my husband and appear unruffled, the Prophet had no trouble going about his business and enjoying his dessert.

A disturbing thought came to me as I walked to join Paul. Perhaps I don’t know the Prophet at all.

The Trouble with Love A Sex, Love & Stiletto Novel (Sex, Love, & Stiletto Series Book 4) by Lauren Layne

As Lauren Layne’s salacious Sex, Love & Stiletto series returns, a jaded columnist discovers a steamy way to get over an old flame: falling for him all over again.

As Stiletto magazine’s authority on all things breakup-and-heartache, Emma Sinclair writes from personal experience. Five years ago, Emma was Charlotte, North Carolina’s darling debutante and a blushing bride-to-be. Now she’s the ice queen of the Manhattan dating scene. Emma left her sultry Southern drawl behind, but not even her closest friends know that with it she left her heart. Now Emma’s latest article forces her to face her demons—namely, the devilishly sexy guy who ditched her at the altar.

After giving up everything for a pro-soccer career, Alex Cassidy watches his dreams crumble as a knee injury sidelines him for good. Now he’s hanging up his cleats and giving journalism a shot. It’s just a coincidence that he happens to pick a job in the same field, and the same city, as his former fiancée . . . right? But when Emma moves in next door, it’s no accident. It’s research. And Alex can’t help wondering what might have been. Unlike the innocent girl he remembers, this Emma is chic, sophisticated, and assertive—and she wants absolutely nothing to do with him. The trouble is, Alex has never wanted her more.

REVIEW:

Emma and Cassidy's story is one of my favorites so far! I love all the sexual tension between the two of them throughout the book. Since this week was a Lauren Layne marathon for me, I enjoyed the books even more because I was able to read them one after the other. I was addicted to say the least. I may have even been reading some while stuck in traffic today (shhhhh) because I couldn't get enough! I wanted to know so bad what happened next.. Who doesn't love Alex Cassidy or any of the guys in the series! But Emma and Alex stole my heart.. And of course I'm obsessed with Lincoln (who isn't?) but honestly, Not many people could get through a situation like Emma and Cassidy and come out on side they did. The way Lauren tells their story is amazing and heartfelt. I'm kind of sad my Stiletto marathon is over! Did I mention I want to work there just so I can be part of Lincoln's black book???

I highly recommend this book and everything by Lauren Layne to be honest! Five stars from me :)

Just One Night: A Sex, Love & Stiletto Novel (Sex, Love, & Stiletto Series Book 3) by Lauren Layne

In Lauren Layne’s sizzling Sex, Love & Stiletto series, New York’s hottest “sexpert” has been living a lie—and it’s up to one man to keep her honest . . . all night long.

Riley McKenna knows sex—good sex, bad sex, kinky sex. Her articles in Stiletto magazine are the publication’s most scandalous—and the most read. But when Stiletto’s fiftieth anniversary issue requires her column to get a lot more personal, Riley is forced to confront a long-hidden secret: Her own sexual experience is limited to one awkward college encounter. Now Riley is about to call in the favor of a lifetime from the one man who’s always held her heart.

Sam Compton knows two things about Riley McKenna: She’s the only woman for him. But as his best friend’s little sister, she’s also completely off-limits. Sam shouldn’t even consider her proposition: to have a one-night stand in the name of research. But the thought of another man putting his hands on Riley is more than Sam can handle, and soon he’s agreeing to one night with New York’s resident sexpot. But Riley’s full of surprises, and what starts as “one time only” soon becomes “just one more time.” And then one more. And before they know it, Riley and Sam learn firsthand that when it comes to love, there’s no such thing as just one night.

REVIEW by Jeanine:

I just love this series! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE the way Lauren writes! I again fell in love with Sam and Riley and really fell in love with their story. It was heart breaking what Sam deals with, with his own Mother. No wonder he doesn't feel worthy of anyone, or good at anything. With Riley being Stiletto Magazines brains behind all the hot sex scenes she writes, you would think she's had a ton of experience right? Her heart has always been with Sam though. Her big brothers Best Friend. The sexual tension between the two is dangerous.. Because according to Sam, Riley is off limits. He promised her brother ten years ago he would keep his hands to himself. But when Riley is faced with having to write a personal article about her life .. She realizes she really doesn't have any experience and goes to Sam to help her out with a little favor. He agrees.... At first. Get downloading! Everyone needs to read this series! It's amazing, heartfelt, funny, steamy...

I highly recommend! You won't be disappointed! I stared this series just a few short days ago and I am already starting book four tonight! It's addicting!!!!

THIS IS A MUST READ SERIES !!!!

Love the One Your With (Sex, Love, & Stiletto Series Book 2) by Lauren Layne

Lauren Layne’s Sex, Love & Stiletto series simmers to a boil as two high-powered magazine writers find love amid a war of words.

As a leading columnist for Stiletto, Grace Brighton has built a career warning women about rotten, cheating liars. She just never suspected her fiancé would be one of them. After Grace takes a heart-mending hiatus, her first assignment is to go on a couple of dates with a counterpart from the men’s magazine Oxford and report her impressions. Grace 1.0 may have been instantly smitten with the gorgeous correspondent, but Grace 2.0 has sworn off relationships for six months, and she’s not falling for his outstanding bod and trophy-winning kisses . . . or is she?

Jake Malone wants to get back to the fly-by-night, who-knows-what’s-next guy he used to be, and he knows exactly how to do it. Oxford is adding a travel section, and Jake—with no wife and no kids and a willingness to live anywhere, eat anything, do everything—is perfect for the job . . . except that his playboy reputation makes his new editor nervous. To get the gig, he must agree to a fluffy joint article with Stiletto. But after just one date with snooty, sumptuous, sensational Grace Brighton, Jake starts taking this assignment a whole lot more seriously.

REVIEW:

So, I'm now a HUGE Lauren Layne fan. Not that I wasn't before but meaning, mid way through the book I looked her up on Facebook, followed her page, signed up for her weekly emails, pre ordered "Cuff Me" ... Well you get the point. I love her style of writing and love how I fall in love with every single character, every single time. Grace and Jake, my favorite so far. Loved their connection, loved their story, loved the comedy, loved everything about this book! Jake and Grace have been assigned to work together for an article. After a nine year break up and not wanting anything to do with men, Grace all but jumps at the opportunity. Jake however, only took it on with a couple conditions.. He gets to do the travel section after this is through and travel the world but first..... They have to go on five dates and right an article after each one. The readers get to pick who is falling for who faster if at all etc..

What they do to each other back and forth is hysterical! Of course there's all the in between dates too and meeting in the hallways at work... Lunch trips far away from people watching. Jakes tracks gig happens just a few days before their finale after the 5th date. He has to go to Costa Rica sooner then his Boss originally thought and now has to leave Grace. Read to find out if he does indeed go! You won't be disappointed! Finished book one yesterday, book two today and starting book three right now! Love love love her books!!!!!!!

REVIEW ~ THE ONE FOR ME by Sydney Landon

The New York Times bestselling author of Watch Over Me delivers a steamy new novel of irresistible attraction in her popular Danvers series.

Mark DeSanto has never denied himself anything—especially in the bedroom. Rich, attractive, and successful, men envy him and women desire him. But when a sweet, guileless beauty faints at his feet, he suddenly finds himself wondering if it’s time to look for something more lasting....

Until her divorce, Crystal Webber never knew what it was like to follow her heart. Now she wants to experience all life has to offer. So when she catches a glimpse of Mark DeSanto in the halls of Danvers International, she’s instantly infatuated—and eager to join him for a walk on the wild side. Fainting at his feet wasn’t her plan, but at least it got his attention....

But for the first time, Mark wants to take things slow, which—considering the electricity between them—may take far more willpower than he’s ever had.

Review:

I have always been a fan of Sydney Landon and The Danver Series books since the very first one, Weekends Required. It can definitely be read as a standalone. I didn’t read a couple of books in the series and I was able to follow Mark and Crystal’s story just fine. The only thing I found confusing was who was dating/married to who or who was related to whom. Or also who worked for who. It just got too much to follow at one point since everyone hung out with one another. If you followed the series from the beginning and kept up with it, it wouldn’t have been as overwhelming since they introduced everyone as the books came about. Other than that it was fairly easy to follow. After reading this book though, I would like to go back and read the books i missed in between.
“I know you think I’m some goody two-shoes, but I can be bad – I want to be. I’ve never been given the opportunity before.”
Crystal is one of the sweetest people, with the biggest hearts and possibly even one of the biggest pushovers ever. Which is probably why she ended up married to Bill to begin with. She wasn’t happy, she didn’t love him. Her mother did. She claimed he was perfect for her. But he wasn’t. He was the complete opposite from her. He loved to dictate how her life went, even though it was a life she loved living. But she did it for so long to make everyone but herself happy until she couldn’t do it no more. To her evil mother she was just a disappointment. Her mother seemed to love him more than her. Crystal could never do anything right by her mom, ever. With her divorce behind her, she wants to get her life back and has her eyes set on Mark. Her sex life has been lacking and she wants to rectify that. She feels he will do it for her, even if just for a night.
“Angel, I can’t be your white knight, and baby, you deserve to have one. I’m not capable of giving you what you’re looking for.”
Mark is has no issues in the ladies department, all the ladies want a piece of him and he never has the same woman twice. That’s just his MO. He has no interest in settling down anytime soon. He is focused on his company, his many women, and having fun. He notices Crystal he likes what he sees.  But when she literally throws up on him and falls to his feel he feels the sudden urge to take her home and care for her. Mark has never has that feeling take over before and it’s a bit overwhelming, but it feels rather settling for him. It feels comfortable having Crystal in her home he doesn’t want her to leave.
“Mark stood staring down at the woman in his bed. It unnerved him that she looked so right lying there – as if she belonged.”
After spending the weekend caring for Crystal, Mark knows she is different than any other woman he has been with. She’s not the hit it and quit it type, she’s the relationship/forever type far from who he is. He needs to stay far away from her. Yet it’s something he can’t seem to do. His mind always goes back to her. Crystal is a persistent little thing though propositioning him for a night of fun because she knows that’s the type of man he is. Though Mark can’t do that to her. He wants to do it right and takes things slowly. It’s funny to see the role reversal. The playboy has gone soft and slow while the quiet mouse is ready to attack. You can cut the sexual chemistry with a knife. He definitely wants to give in to her, bad. But he wants to be soo good. It’s hard to keep his head in the game. No pun intended. They both mesh well together, they fit together so naturally and they both have to please evil parents. I just love who they are together.
“She makes me want shit I’ve never desired before, and that’s scary as hell.”
Crystal knows that Mark only does one night, but yet he can’t stay away from her. He wants more with her. Who would have thought? He is battling his feelings for her. He’s afraid to admit how he feels for her. He hasn’t felt like this for anyone before so he doesn’t know what to do with it. He can’t get attached to her, he’s incapable of love. . Mark doesn't know whether to push her away or to pull her close. Crystal is making things hard to him to take things slowly.
“People come into our lives for a variety of reasons, and if we’re smart, we take advantage of what they have to offer.”
Everything seems to be going well for Crystal and Mark. Their friends all love him. And I love how we get the old Danvers gang back into the mix. We catch how they are doing and the kids as well. But then when the ex-husband comes back in the picture it stirs the pot up a bit. Crystal has now become her own person, speaking up for herself and making her own decisions and not pleasing anyone. What happens when he tries to weasel his way back in? Or when Mark’s parents make an appearance. What happens when both of his worlds collide?

Will Bill try rekindle their old romance? Will Crystal be easily manipulated again? Will she have a backbone and stand up for herself? Or will she revert back to her old ways and do things to please everyone else? What will Mark do with his feelings for Crystal? Will Mark and Crystal be able to survive everything thrown at them? Or are their world’s just too different to survive it all?

I was completely captivated with this book and was not able to put it down. I was able to connect with the characters in the story, placing me right there with them. I loved Mark and Crystal’s story. Just seeing how the crazed Crystal was once obsessed over Mark make a fool over herself in front of him and how he cares for her. She is constantly embarrassing herself in front of him yet he still wants her. He never wants anyone more than once and here she is, plain Crystal and he can’t seem to stay away. There’s just something about her. She may seem like a push over but Mark brings out the best in her. They bring out the best in each other.
