Without Merit is not your typical Colleen Hoover book. Colleen went back to her beginning roots as an author and dipped her toe into YA again. 

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I have to be honest, the feelings that it caused were NOT expected. Colleen had talked about how she needed something light after finishing It Ends With Us. Don't let that fool you. Colleen ALWAYS writes about subjects that her readers can relate to. Situations that some may have experienced.  

Without Merit is a story about a teenage girl named Merit and her dysfunctional family. At least Merit thinks they are. Merit is tired of keeping the secrets of her family. She is fed up lying to cover for their discretions.

Merit meets a guy named Sagan, who she instantly feels connected to. Funny thing is, he feels it too, but for totally different reasons. Merit feels like an outsider in the Voss Family. Sagan seems to be the one person that understands her. 

One night changes everything in the Voss household. Secrets are revealed, people are forced to take responsibility for their actions. When Merit discloses all of the family's secret, she is forced to deal with the consequences of HER actions. We are always taught that every action has a consequence. But is that true? Rather than a consequence, couldn't we just offer a second chance. One bad judgment, doesn't make a person bad.

This book delivers all sorts of emotions. To see this girl struggle with who she is, where she fits in, what her role in all of this is. My heart broke for her. I wanted to pull Merit into my arms and just hug her.

If you are looking for a great YA read, with all the feels, then WITHOUT MERIT is definitely a book you want to pick up.

Let me start off by saying that Corrupt (Book 1) was in my TOP 5 books last year. Actually it was #2. I could not get enough of these characters. I have read Corrupt multiple times, that's how much I love it.  So that brings me to HIDEAWAY, which is Book 2 in the series and focuses on KAI.

Kai was a mystery to me in Corrupt. I was intrigued by him. The sauna scene in Corrupt blew my mind. I was never expecting that. But once again, it made me want to know more about him. What made him tick. What made him the man he is.

In Hideaway, we learn that a girl 6 years ago caught the attention of Kai. He stumbled upon her unknowingly at church, of all places. He was able to talk openly to her, able to show a little glimpse of his true self to her. All was done while without knowing the identity of her. Little did he know, she KNEW him. She was familiar with him. She knew who he was. 

Banks was the girl on the other side of the confessional. She listened intently while Kai talked about what excited him. What drove him.  Banks was quite the heroine. She was strong, inquisitive, and knew what she wanted even at a young age. When Banks fist spoke with Kai, she was 17, he was a year older than her, being 18.

Kai and Banks seem to cross paths a few times before Kai realized, she was the girl from the church. The girl he bared a little bit of his soul to. For some reason, he felt as though he could confide in her. The only problem is, Kai truly doesn't know Banks. 

Damon, one of Kai's best friends, seems to have an interest in Banks. Damon is very protective of her, or shall I say POSSESSIVE of her.... big difference. But why? Damon treats women like they are objects. Toy or tool? 

So what is it about Banks that has these up in arms about her. Kai is definitely interested in her. He wants to know more about this mystery girl. But Damon is in the way at every turn.

We all know the turn of events that occur in Corrupt. I won't go into them, in case you haven't read it yet. Damon plays a KEY role in this book. He has Kai, Will, Michael and Rika on high alert. What will Damon do? When will Damon strike? How will this turn out? 

When the bomb is dropped, and a revelation is revealed, I was like, oh my goodness, Penelope is a genius. This is going to be EPIC...  

Some say that love only hurts. But is that true? Trust is usually earned, right? At every turn, Banks seems to choose one person over the other? The question is.... WHY?  That answer is pivotal in this book.  

Penelope's sense of humor shines in this book and I laughed out loud a few times, especially during one particular scene. "Whoa there tiger." (read the book and you will know why I was cracking up.)

Hideaway is deep, dark and will have you spiraling to know what happens next. Hideaway kept me on the edge of my seat with each turn of the page. It's intense from start to finish.

JB Salsbury has done it again, she breaks your heart into a million pieces and slowly and methodically puts it back together and smooths the pieces out.  She has an amazing way with a story and her characters.  She writes the broken person so unbelievably wonderful.  4.5 beautiful stars!
