BLOG TOUR ~ The Consequence of Loving Colton by Rachel Van Dyken ~ REVIEW & CHARACTER INTERVIEW

RELEASE: April 21st, 2015

It’s all fun and games…until someone’s heart is broken.

They’re not kids anymore, but Milo Caro is certain that Colton Mathews will only see her as his best friend’s little sister for the rest of their lives. After all, he made that clear the night before she left for college. But four years later, her brother is getting married and Colt’s the best man—and guess who is the best man’s last-minute date?

Milo vows to use the wedding to either claim the smoldering firefighter’s heart or douse this torch for good. When Max—her best friend from college, who may be carrying a torch of his own—crashes the party, they devise a plan to make Colt see what he’s missing. But after Colt catches on, he decides to cook up his own revenge.

Now it’s personal. Colt and Milo are at war, and between Max’s questionable acting methods, an unfortunate trip to jail, and a maniacal fiancĂ©e, what could possibly go right?

REVIEW:

What do you get when you go home for your brothers wedding where you are asked to be the date of the one person you have loved since you were a child? The one person you always knew would protect you, the one person who you have compared all others too and worked so hard to get over but he has friend zoned you every time there was a moment. What do you do when he gives you more moments and won't leave you alone for hours after your arrival? What do you do when he kisses you then says he is sorry it shouldn’t have happened, YOU cry, you can't control it. Then you lie and it starts a domino effect of epic proportions. Milo has been in love with Colton since she was a child. They were inseparable but when she hits puberty she notices a change in Colton, he makes sure she stays in the friend zone and reminds her often. The problem is they are best friends and they are together all of the time and nothing she does can change the way she feels about him and how he feels about her. By time college comes she knows she needs to get away, she needs to learn to live her life without Colton by her side and try to move on. Now she is back for her brother's wedding and she has to spend the weekend with him after 4 years of barely seeing him. After 4 years of comparing every man to him and after 4 years it appears nothing has changed. Except she doesn't know while nothing has changed he has always loved her in return. But whats a guy to do when he is in love with his best friends little sister and he would rather have her in his life above all else then to be with her romantically and lose her in the end. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. Never EVER have I laughed from beginning to end, never have I been endeared to every character including the villain in the book, never have I seen the shit storm that could occur when a feisty wonderful girl is in love with the most caring, lovable man. Then you add her brother, her best friend, his brother, her Grandmom and a bitch of a soon to be sister in law and you get this wonderful book that you will read 100 times and never be tired of it.

I would like to thank everyone for stopping by Naughty and Nice Book Blog. We have been fortunate to steal a few seconds from their day to sit down and discuss what loving colton has been like for Milo.  AND, what loving Milo was been like for Colton.

Did the parents always par-take in the craziness that Colt, Milo and Jason endured?
Not always I mean there had to be some adults present right?

Has Reid recovered from Grandmom?
I think Reid’s going to need a few more years of therapy before he gets over Grandma…especially considering last time he went grocery shopping and saw chapstick, yes you read that right, the last time he saw it, he screamed and ran into a magazine stand.

How has things worked out with being married and being back at school?
Pretty good all things considering…Colt has a really great schedule since he’s a firefighter.

What kind of job does Milo have to be able to afford a Mercedes?
No job just the love of her daddy…and the fact that she actually went to college and wasn’t caught smoking weed like Jason when they were in high school…all kidding aside, it was her high school graduation present considering she had a lot of scholarships for college.

Did Colt ever read your diary?
Colt will never. Ever. Ever. Touch that thing. Ever. Plus I’m pretty sure Max confiscated it for his own amusement.

What does Colts tattoo look like?
It’s the script he wanted from his dad plus a few little designs including a small bird and a haunting tree with a single leave falling to the ground.

Colt, were you shocked that Jason knew you had feelings for Milo since you were young?
Yeah, I think I was so worried he would find out that I never considered he actually knew.

Colt, how is your relationship with Max now?
Max is….I don’t really know how to explain him. He’s the brother I never wanted, but have been cursed with—for eternity.

Have the two of you legalized your marriage yet?
YES! We finally did a few weeks ago..it was getting irritating having Max say we were living in sin.

Colt, knowing the Milo was a virgin and you were her first.  How did that make you feel?
Like a bad ass….I wanted to be the only one to touch her and I got my wish. Had she not been a virgin I wouldn’t have minded at all, what guy would? The bigger deal would have been if Max had in fact touched her.

Prologue
Summer 2009

“I can’t believe you’re really going to college, Milo.” Colton’s teasing smile flashed right in front of me, rendering me temporarily blind. Man, he was beautiful. His normally dark-brown hair had shots of gold from the summer sun. Dimples peeked out from his mega-white smile and I was pretty confident that I saw a twinkle in his green eyes meant just for me. He’d been home for two months since graduation and was already off saving the world one fire at a time. I watched his full lips curve around the mouth of his Corona. He and my brother Jason had organized a going-away party for me. Apparently me getting accepted into NYU was a big deal: they’d even gone so far as to get a Star Wars–themed cake from Dairy Queen and a princess tiara that said “Pretty” across it. It was always their joke with me. I was a complete and total tomboy—I loved picking fights and getting muddy—yet still demanded they treat me like a princess.

With a sigh I leaned back on the picnic blanket and looked up at the stars. My crown fell to the side of my head, causing my hair to fall all over my face. The party had been over for a few hours, leaving me, Colt, and Jason. I should have been happy: after all, who does that for their little sister? What brother would even care? Furthermore, the fact that it had all been Colt’s idea, someone who wasn’t even family, was huge. But . . . maybe that’s the part that left me feeling empty. I might as well be family to Colton. I was the little sister he’d never had—and secretly, I’d always wanted to be so much more.

“Aw, you messed up your hair,” Colton teased, lifting the crown with the tip of his finger and giving me a sexy wink.

“Whatever shall I do?” I huffed.

“I’ll save you.” His voice was just above a whisper. “I’ve always wanted to save a princess.”

“You did.” My grin was huge. “You saved me a least a hundred times when we were little—slew the dragon at the top of the stairs and did it all without getting a scratch.”

“Messy job.” He let out a long, exaggerated sigh. “I don’t know how I made it to my twenty-first birthday without getting singed.”

“Donald didn’t breathe fire. He was a fireless dragon, remember?”

“Oh, right.” His eyes twinkled. “How is the old dragon anyway?”

I shrugged and chewed on my lower lip. “Haven’t been in the attic since you guys left for school. I’ve been busy.”

“Too busy to play?”

I rolled my eyes. “Too busy graduating to play, yeah.”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

“Fun.” I snorted. “The last time I had fun was when we snuck into your parents’ pool and—” I clamped my mouth shut before the words could tumble out on their own. Crap. Crap. Crap.

“Skinny-dipped.” He finished my thought. “Yeah, that was a blast.”

“Hey, guys!” Jason called as he ran out of the house. “Dad needs me to grab Mom from work so I’ll be right back! Don’t do anything fun without me! I mean it!”

The loud roar from his truck drowned out our conversation for a brief second and then slowly dissipated as the vehicle barreled down the driveway.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” Colton asked.

If his thoughts were along the line of finally getting him alone, away from my brother? “Absolutely.” I grinned as he grabbed my hand and helped me off the blanket.

“Come on. Let’s go have fun.”

Curious, I followed Colt as we ran through a few backyards and finally ended up at his house.

“What are we doing?” I asked in a hushed voice.

“Having fun.” I swear his grin made my heart almost stop. “Now strip, Milo, we don’t have all night and Jason’s going to be pissed he isn’t with us.”

Laughing, I took off my shirt and shorts—I’d spent years swimming with the guys in my sports bra and underwear, though as we got older it became weird, but only on my end. It felt strange to strip down to nothing, knowing that my feelings for Colton were very real whereas his were nonexistent. I mean, it was Colton. Sure, I had a crush on him, but he never, ever thought of me that way. Ever.

“Last one in’s a rotten—”

I didn’t hear him finish—but I did beat him into the water. His mom and stepdad’s pool was always my favorite place to swim. It had a little waterfall in the deep end that you could swim under that always made me think of fairy tales and the movies. Then again, that could be because every time I broke through the water it was Colton’s face I saw, and his smile that drew me. He was my own personal Prince Charming.

Laughing, Colton splashed around, then hauled himself out of the pool and did a cannonball right by my face. I was glad that it was dark—I must have been beet-red. Man, the guy was ripped.

“Wanna race?” he asked, out of breath.

“Wanna lose?” I countered.

“Never.”

“Um, it’s an everyday occurrence.” I swam over to the edge. “Ready, set—”

“—go!” He ran instead of swam and then dove under water.

Bastard! Arms burning, I tried to make it to the other end of the pool. I usually didn’t open my eyes under water, but this time I did to see where I was going.

His body was a blur in front of me. All I saw was hard-lined muscle.

I stopped right in front of him and jumped to the surface. “You cheated.”

“I like to call it winning.” He beamed triumphantly.

“Cheating.” My teeth ground together as I pushed against his chest. Laughing, he fell backward, pulling me with him. Our bodies ground together, heat against heat, skin against skin.

And suddenly sneaking away from Jason wasn’t funny anymore.

Neither of us was laughing.

His hands moved from my waist slowly up my body until they rested on my face. With a curse he pulled my head toward his. “We should . . .”

“Yeah,” I whispered.

Neither of us pulled away.

His lips brushed mine, just enough to make me strain toward him—I needed him like I needed air.

“Kids!” His stepdad’s voice rang through the night air. “You out here making noise?”

Colton pushed me away and I nearly hit my head on the waterfall rocks.

“Yeah, just . . . hanging out!” Colton called. “I’m with Jason’s sister.”

I froze. He’d never called me that before. He even said it in such a final way, as if that was all I would ever be. Period. My heart didn’t just sink . . . it shuddered, then combusted, as all the hopes I’d harbored since I was thirteen came to a crushing world-altering halt. My suspicions were finally confirmed. Out loud. On the day the boy I liked had thought enough to throw me a party.

The line had been drawn. And I might as well be on the other side of the universe.

That was the day I lost Colton Mathews—forever.

Pre-Release Promo ~ Under the Influence by L.B. Simmons

Dalton,
I loved you once. A love I thought irrevocable. A love I mistakenly believed could transcend both time and circumstance. Under the influence of my dimwitted, naĂŻve, traitorous heart, I became intoxicated with what I now know was simply a figment of my self-indulgent imagination. So drunk on the feeling, I couldn’t see what was right in front of my face. So foolishly enamored, I blindly followed my heart into the depths of an emotion that would ravage me.

Years later, I know now what I wish I knew then. I am stronger. Smarter. Tougher. I will not allow myself to be broken again.
I loved you.
I raged for you.
I wept for you.
And now, I’m letting you go.

Author’s Note:  Under the Influence is the journey of two childhood friends that spans the course of five pivotal years in their lives. It is a story about their discovery of true friendship as it blossoms into first love, their experience of crucial sacrifice and ultimate betrayal, and their endurance of agonizing heartbreak on the way to finding lasting redemption.

His heart was turned off…

Until she turned him on…

Christopher Moore gave up on the idea of love years ago. Now, his life is an endless string of parties and an even longer string of girls. Enjoying the physical perks with none of the emotional mess, he’s convinced everyone that he’s satisfied—everyone but himself.

Samantha Schultz has moved on with her life. Finishing her student teaching and living with her boyfriend, she’s deluded herself into believing she’s content. But there is one boy she never forgot—her first love—and she keeps the memory of him locked up tight. She will never allow any man to break her the way Christopher did.

When Christopher’s sister and her family move into a new neighborhood, Christopher is completely unprepared to find Samantha living at the end of the street. Memories and unspent desires send them on collision course of sex, lies, and lust. But when guilt and fear send Samantha running, Christopher will have to fight for what has always been his.

“No one tells a story about "The One" with as much beauty and tragedy as AL Jackson does. You can't read her words without having them sink deep inside of you and sticking around like a favorite memory.” ~ New York Times bestselling author Jay Crownover

REVIEW:

I am a huge fan of this series. I have been waiting patiently to get Christopher's story and I was not disappointed. I knew there was more to Christopher. He was a caring brother who loved his sister fiercely, so I knew there had to be a girl out there that he once loved, but he was hurting.

When reading Come to Me Recklessly, we get both Christopher and Samantha's POV. Which I have to admit, I loved.  We see that Samantha is still in love with the boy who broke her heart. Samantha's heart has always belonged to Christopher even though she has tried to move forward with her life.  But it is hard to move forward and try to love someone else, when your heart only loves one person. The person who she feels betrayed her.

Christopher has been struggling for years trying to erase the one girl from his life that meant the most. The one girl who stole his heart when he was just a teenager. Jared, Christopher's best friend isn't the only one in this series that is fighting the demons of his past. Christopher is haunted everyday by them. He uses woman to try to heal his wounds, but rather than healing them, they are only making them deeper.

Samantha's life is turned upside down when she runs into someone from her past, Ali, Christopher's sister.  Could she have a relationship with Ali?  Would having a friendship with Ali, stir up her feelings that she has been trying to suppress for years?

When Christopher comes face to face with his past, his world comes crashing down around him.  How could Ali be friends with Samantha after all these years?  Christopher still has feelings for Samantha, that is obvious. She's always belonged him.  Not a day went by that he didn't think of her... yearn for her.  A few words he said to her years ago has haunted him to this day. "Just you and me and forever."  Those words haunted Samantha as well.

Samantha is still in love with Christopher, but will she ever trust him again?  Will she open herself up to him after what he did to her? Can she give him her heart again, even if he has had it the entire time?  She lost him once, could she survive losing him twice.
"You broke my heart once. You don't get to do it again." ~ Samantha
When the two of them seem to be running into each other a lot, things begin to change. Christopher refuses to share Samantha. After all these years, he saw a slight glimmer of hope that he could possibly get the girl who he has dreamed about back.
"If I take you back to my place, it means you're mine, Samantha.  You understand what I'm telling you?  Otherwise I'm taking you straight home." ~ Christopher
With getting each of their POVs, we quickly realize that they both are harboring ill feelings toward each other.  We don't exactly know what it is. Christopher blames Samantha for their brake up, where Samantha clearly blames him for shattering her heart into a million pieces. What we have are two very hurt individuals that have been carry a lot of pain for years.  Will they give each other the opportunity to explain?  Will they continue to push each other away?  Can Christopher continue to fight the pull Samantha has on him? Can he continue to resist her or will he follow his heart?  Will Christopher open his heart again to the idea of love? Can Samantha forgive Christopher? Will the two of them be able to get past their pasts and have a future together?

This is one of my favorite scenes of the book which pretty much summed up the book for me. This is a scene with Christopher and his mom at Ali's house when he sees Samantha.

"You want to know what I walked in on ten minutes ago?"

"No, I really don't."
Ignoring me, she continued on, "Two very confused, very hurt people. Two people who obviously need to forgive each other. Two people who are trapped somewhere in the past. You think I didn't know you were torn up over her, Christopher? You think I didn't see you change after the two of you broke up?"

"I changed when my best friend tried to kill himself and got himself sent away."

She huffed in disappointment. "That scared you, Christopher.  Hurt you.  What happened with Jared made you question everything in your life.  It did that to all of us. But I know there was so much more to it than that...  and I know it had everything to do with that girl outside."

This was one of my favorite scenes in the book. His mother knew the heartache that Christopher had. She wasn't pushing her opinion on his, she was simply telling her what she observed. That these two individuals needed to forgive each other in order to move forward. They both needed to let go of the past in order to learn to love again... to feel alive again.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I also purchased my own copy from Amazon.
