BLOG TOUR ~ Unbreakable by Gigi Aceves

SYNOPSIS:

As a child, Roxy Oliver experienced her first heartache resulting in her trusting only a few…

As a man, Cody Davis experienced many deaths while serving in the Marines; however, his greatest grief was when two of the most important people in his life died, resulting in him needing to be in control….

Both lost the same thing…

Felt the same pain….

Suffered the same fate…

The loss of LOVE.

Finally, destiny’s smiling their way as love blossoms between them. When danger comes knocking, threatening to destroy what they both hold dear, is it an unmistakable love when he’s willing to give up his life for hers, or is that control?
Isn’t it an unmistakable love when protecting him is the only choice she has, or is
that trusting no one, but herself?

So, when everything’s left broken….

Will control prevail over trust, or will forgiveness be the road that leads them to their unmistakable love…

“Love always protects, always trust, always hopes, and always perseveres.”
 1 Corinthians 13:7

Roxy’s POV

“Baby girl, I hope, someday, you’ll have it in your heart to forgive me. I can’t undo what’s been done; it’s too late anyway. Life is full of limitations and restrictions, but what I can give you is freedom from the hell I’ve created. You’ll have a better life living it away from me…far away from this.”

As soon as I hear my door close, I know who to call. I’m tired of all the lies, deception, and conditions. With a shaky voice and a hopeful heart, I call the one person, the one family member, who loves me unconditionally.

“Uncle Jack,” My hurt filled voice manages to say two words. That’s all I need to say.
His confident voice never wavers, “I’ll be there, kiddo. You trust me?”

“One hundred and ten percent,” I say with as much conviction as a child my age can possibly conjure.

“Outstanding! I’ll see you soon.”

At such a young age, I lost trust, not in love, but in people. How could I not? When the two I’ve grown up with webbed a life full of deception, my own father put conditions on his love for me, my own mother doesn’t want me, I lock my feelings tight, secure them with all of my ten year old strength, and time it shut with my not-so-innocent-from-pain heart, telling myself to never…ever let anyone in.

Not even death can make me open it ever again.

Even though my heart is in the state it’s in, a small part of my heart tells me that when God closes a door, He always…always opens a window; small enough to breathe…wide enough to escape…just enough to live, and just the perfect time to start. My new beginning is with the only four people I know I can trust…with them I’m safe, loved, and free. I’m free to be me.

The love they offer is without restriction…it’s genuine…it’s undeniable…it’s unmistakable.

I’m a middle child, and no, I don’t suffer from the middle child syndrome. According to my parents, I’m the craziest, and I think, my husband and children agree with them.
Besides the births of my two children, my husband’s successful transplant is one of the most memorable moments of my crazy life! After dealing with two bouts of cancer, my husband served as an inspiration to me and my children. I’m privileged to be married and go on this crazy ride, we call life, with a man who doesn’t know the meaning of giving up.
I’m known as The Crazy Cat Lady, in the Wanted World. Am I crazy? Well, the jury is still out on that one, but I’d like to think I can make one person smile with my craziness.

EXCERPT from The Loner:

“Whatever committee I’m on. She has to be on it.”
“It can be arranged.”
“Arrange it.” Will turned and walked away before he did anything else stupid. He headed for the short hallway off the main patio. He hadn’t made his revenge speech yet.
He leaned against the wall opposite the door marked “Women,” tipped his head back against the stucco surface, and drew a steadying breath. He could count the number of times he’d seen her without a jacket. The lavender dress she wore offered revealing views of her person. From thin straps the neckline dipped in a simple lace-edged V. While Chambers spoke, Will’s eyes kept wandering back to that dipping V. He imagined hooking his fingers in those straps and pushing them down over her shoulders. And then telling her how over her he was. That was the plan, right?
When the door opened, he shifted, flattening a palm against each wall, blocking her way. She halted in front of him and squared her shoulders.
“Nice lace.”
She blushed instantly, and her response sent a hot flash to his groin.
She recovered quicker than he did. “Do you know why Josh Huntington threw us together tonight?”
“His deep devotion to Canyon.”
A look of disgust crossed her face. “Josh doesn’t do anything that isn’t purely in his own self-interest.”
He was glad to hear her say it. At least she wasn’t taken in by the guy. His own questions were pressing on him again. “Why did you leave Canyon?”
“Why did you come here tonight?”
He kept his palms flat against each wall. “Are you kidding? New Directions for Canyon? I’m the only guy who doesn’t see the place as a holy shrine. You want to hear my idea for Canyon? Sell it to developers, bring in the wrecking ball and the backhoes, and give hundreds of poor kids a full college ride.”
“An excellent plan. Hostile, but practical.” She tried to slip by him, and he leaned forward, bringing his face within inches of hers.
“Make me less hostile.” He reached out a hand and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. Her whole body shivered at the touch, and he felt gut-punched. He forced himself to press for the answers he wanted. “Why didn’t you answer that letter?”
He caught a puzzled look in her eyes, but the men’s room door opened.
“This is not the time or the place for this conversation.”
“Come with me. You can explain it.”
Voices intruded. Two men stepped into the hallway and halted. Will took his hands from the walls. Deep brown eyes pleaded with him. He took her arm, leading her down the hall.
“You were eighteen,” she said in a low voice.
“I knew my mind. You pretended not to know yours.”
“You had an amazing college opportunity ahead of you.”
“You didn’t believe in me. You believed in guys like Moreland, but not in me. You thought I wouldn’t make it.”
“You had not even begun to live. I was a widow. My husband had been dead barely a year. A year.”
“You saw where I lived,” he said quietly. “You were afraid to take a chance on a nobody like me.”
“I did what I had to do, what I thought was right. And look at you. You’ve done well. Without me. You can’t deny it.” She slipped out of his hold and headed across the patio.
A smart man would let her go. He decided to be smart.

AUTHOR BIO:

Kate has lived most of her life along the California coast. That experience has made her a jeans-wearing, toes in wet-sand, married to a surfer, fog-loving weather wimp, with a hint of East Coast polish from spending her college years in Boston. Family history connects her to Irish and English immigrants, Cornish miners, gold prospectors, and adventurers who sailed around Cape Horn bound for San Francisco.

When she's not reading, writing or brainstorming, Kate walks in the redwoods, feed birds, collect books, apples and leaves; she watches tele-novellas on Spanish-language TV and immerses herself in all things English. Her favorite food groups are butter, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and red wine. Kate's early literary influences were The Little Engine That CouldThe Little Red Hen, and Winnie the Pooh. Austen, Heyer, Chaucer, and Homer came later and inspired her to put that first plot on paper.

Kate's heroes are honorable, virile outsiders with some grand ambition; her heroines are practical princesses, who drive those edgy loners into love with good sense and good sex.

Her family and friends offer endless support and humor. Kate says her children are her best works, and her husband is her favorite hero.

EXCERPT:

“You know what rhymes with drunk?” Sam asks. “Sex!”
“Nuh uh,” Meredith replies with a frown. “But fuck does!”
“Drunk and fuck do not rhyme,” Mark says with a surprised laugh.
“It’s closer than sex,” she says defensively.
“Everything rhymes with sex when you get to have it with an apa,” Jules says.
“Julianne,” Nate warns her.
“It’s true!”
“What’s that like, anyway? I’ve always wanted to know.”
“You can’t have sex with my husband.” Jules frowns for a second, then a smile spreads over her gorgeous face. “Well, maybe you can.”
“No,” Nate replies quietly, “she can’t. No offense, Alecia.”
“None taken.” I grin at the crazy-hot man. “You’re hot as fuck, though.”
“He really is,” Jules agrees happily. “And the apa…wow.”
“Will you get one?” I ask Dominic, just as he takes a sip of wine, and he immediately chokes.
“Fuck no.”
“Maybe I’ll have to find someone with one,” I say thoughtfully. “Just to give it a try.”
“That’s it.” Dominic stands with me in his arms and doesn’t even set me down as he begins to stalk out of the tent.
“Where are we going?” I look over his shoulder and see the others laughing and watching us leave. I wave happily and they all wave back.
They’re so friendly.
“I’m going to teach you a lesson, tesoro.”
“A lesson?” I giggle and bury my nose in his neck, breathing him in. “I’m kind of dizzy.”
We pass by the barn. I can hear voices, heavy breathing and Meg giggling.
“I think we found Meg and Will,” I whisper into Dom’s ear, as he hurries past.
Merde, I didn’t need to ever hear that,” Dominic grumbles, making me giggle more. He strides around the store building, where I stood a few hours ago with Jules and Natalie, sets me on my feet, and pins me against the wall.
“I dare you,” he begins with fire in his bright blue eyes, “to say again that you’re going to go find another man to fuck.”
“Um, it was a joke, babe.”
His eyes narrow and his nostrils flare, and I know I’m in big trouble.
“Are you jealous?” I ask incredulously.
“Not usually,” he says. “I’m not the jealous type, but what’s mine is mine, Alecia. And you’re mine. What I have with you, I don’t want with anyone else. You’re all I fucking think about.”
He’s gathering my skirt in his hands until it’s bunched around my waist, and he slips his finger inside the elastic of the crotch of my panties and brushes the lips of my pussy, making me gasp.
“Dom!”
“That’s right.” He bites my lower lip, then soothes it with his tongue and pushes his finger farther into my panties. “Me. I’m the only one who can touch you here, or anywhere. This is mine.”

EXCERPT:

“Let’s make a pact.” Chase put his hand on my shoulder.

“A pact?” I sniffled and turned to him. “What kind of pact?”

“One that’s forever. One that protects people rather than hurts them.”

“How do we do that?” I was suddenly interested. What if I could make all the hurt go away? What if I could save everyone!

“We do this.” Chase pulled out his pocketknife and cut open his hand, then nodded to me to do the same thing. Without pausing I cut open my hand and handed back the knife. “Blood brothers. We’re never gonna hurt each other and we’re gonna save those like your ma, Nixon. Ones who can’t save themselves. We’re going to protect them.”

“How?” I watched as the blood dripped from my open palm.

“Rules.” Chase shrugged. “They keep people safe, right? At least that’s what my mom says.” He smiled. “We make rules and we start our own club. That way, we don’t have to listen to anyone but us.”

I liked it. I chewed on my lower lip. “What do we call ourselves?”

“The chosen?” Chase offered.

“No, that sounds lame. We have to sound… more powerful than that.”

My eyes flickered to the road, and a sign poked into the ground. It said election. “Elect.” I pointed. “Let’s call ourselves The Elect.” It made sense; after all, the president was elected, wasn’t he? We weren’t exactly chosen, but we were making the choice, we were electing ourselves protectors. That’s what we were.

“Who else can join?” Chase asked.

“Tex and Phoenix. They’ll want to.” A weight suddenly felt like it was being lifted off my twelve-year-old shoulders. “Should we shake on it?”

“Yeah.” Chase smashed his hand against mine as our blood mixed. “No going back, Nixon.”

“No.” I shook my head. “No going back.”

I pressed my fingers to my temples and watched, replaying that moment over and over again in my head as the outline of Chase and Tracey flickered in the moonlight. Would he really do this to me? After all the shit we’d been through?

I gauged her reaction, hoping that I would be wrong. Praying to God that Trace would just this once listen to me. Her eyes flickered with interest for a few brief seconds before she looked down at the ground.

“Shit.” I waited in the shadows. A part of me knew this would happen. The part that told me to damn my feelings to hell and ignore all the warning signs that I’d been seeing. But now it seemed like it was too late. I stayed, planted where I was, watching, waiting.

“Chase, you can’t…” Trace shook her head. “You can’t be like this. We can’t do this!”

“We aren’t doing anything,” Chase said in low tones, reaching for Trace’s hand.

“Don’t you?” He looked directly at me, although all he saw was a shadow. I knew I was well hidden. “Don’t you feel the same way?”

Trace jerked her hand away from Chase’s. “It doesn’t matter what I feel. It’s not about me, Chase.”

“But it is.” Chase reached for her again. This time her hand grasped his in such an intimate embrace I thought I was going to vomit all over the ground. The outside air was cold as hell as little pieces of ice tried to find their way into my wool coat.

“It isn’t.” Trace sighed. “It never was.”

Chase jerked her toward him. She fell against his chest and looked up into his eyes

“What are you doing?”

Chase sighed. “What I should have done a long time ago.” He grabbed the back of her head and pulled her in for a kiss. Their lips touched.

I had to look away.

The only sound in the night was that of my soft footsteps as I walked away… leaving my heart in broken pieces where I’d last stood. She was lost to me; it wasn’t even the Sicilians that had taken her, but my best friend.

A gunshot rang out loud and clear in the night air. I turned back around just in time to see Trace collapse into Chase’s arms.
